Stupid question of the day

If I plug our DSL modem and router in our battery backup, will we maintain internet connectivity if the power goes out?

The easy answer: yes.
The hard answer: maybe.

An explanation of the hard answer:
As long as your DSL modem does not lose power, it will try to stay connect to the DSLAM in the Telco's CO. However, there are a few situations where you will be SOL
1. If there is any fibre between you and the CO, and the power to fiber nodes go out, you will be screwed. Very similar to a fibre cut.
2. If the power outage affects the CO, the telco may not use back up power on none vital infrastructure like DSLAMs, and you will lose connectivity. Our company (a Canadian Telco) attempts to have all equipment in our COs powered during an outage. But if it is extended, we cut of all none vital (everything that ain't PSTN) communications.
