Composition is an integral part of Windows 8 UI design from both aesthetic and logical perspectives. It's been a long time since I've done a post or had any motivation to do so. Much of that is due to events that turned my life upside-down for a time. However, I can concentrate on other things now that I'm shaking off the shackles and things are looking brighter. With that in mind here are a couple of random tips for Visual Studio. These tips work specifically in Visual Studio 2010; however, it's possible they may be relevant to past and future versions. Tip #1: Editor does not work correctly for ...
On November 28th, 2011 I had the opportunity to give a presentation at the St. Louis .NET User Group on my experiences developing software for the Windows Azure and SQL Azure platform. Having been at PDC in 2009 for the announcement of Azure and been able to work on a number of Azure projects since that time I frequently see many Azure talks that are either: A) too high level and marketing oriented as they never tell you anything important or B) too low level and focused on a specific feature that ...

As part of the Geeks With Blogs Influencers program a got my hands on ComponentOne’s Studio for Entity Framework. Below are my thought after working with the product for several weeks. My coding preference has always been maintainable code that is reusable across an enterprises protfolio. Because of this my focus in reviewing this product ...

Today TechEd Africa 2011 ended. It was a great conference and the first time I have ever had the opportunity to present an hour long topic – I had the joy of presenting two sessions at this conference, one session based on a topic which I should have been able to cover easily and one with a topic that I battled with and felt totally out of my depth. In retrospect, there are a few bits of advice that I would like to give other people that are thinking of presenting at a conference like this for the ...

Even though this is one of the simplest tips it is one of the hardest to find someone who has documented it. So instead of just telling you I am going to take a quick sidebar first. I wouldn’t want you to feel you got jipped by stopping here. One thing that happened when I finished running the Mango update on my Samsung Focus was that the apps that I was testing forced me to uninstall them. Recently, my Active Directory user account was getting locked out on a regular basis after changing my user account password. In our environment, the most two common causes for Active Directory user account lockouts are disconnected RDP sessions or an invalid password on a mobile device configured for Exchange ActiveSync access. I used the LockoutStatus.exe Tool to search for one or more disconnected RDP sessions using my old password but I was not able to find anything. So, the next thing I checked ...
I have been working with power shell quite a bit lately, I thought I’d write about 3 tips that have helped me. Notice how it is titled, "Helpful"? not "Ground breaking". It includes helpful commands that I have been using and a nice little Script editor that has one feature enough to win me over. Other's have writen about the commands (most of the time I write so I remember what I've done and how I have resolved issues) but I have not seen others write about other script editors. If you have been ...
Wow, it has been awhile, so let's do some catching up. In January 2011 I joined a local gym and have since been pretty dedicated to that and work leaving me little to no time for personal projects (although I've lost almost 40 lbs!). This includes both this blog, posting at Gamasutra, the Deep Fried Devcast, and anything else. Add to this my recent increased interest in music and guitar and I've been left with very little extra time. In fact, I've changed so much about the way I spend my time that ...

In my current job as a Senior ALM Consultant, part of what I do is help organizations get TFS set up and configured. While a single server installation is pretty easy (and using the basic configuration to install TFS on Windows 7 is even easier), there are a few pitfalls and points of frustration when setting TFS up in a two-server configuration. For the purposes of this discussion, I am assuming the following setup: - A database server (Data Tier) with SQL 2008 R2 to house the TFS Databases, Reporting ...
UPDATE! July 8th, 2011 -- I’ve been reading Chris Poteet’s blog for a while (probably since Day of .Net Ohio in 2008 or 2009) and he recently started a new blog covering odd user interface quirks and inconsistencies with SharePoint. He’s titled the blog, Unexpected Error. Well, today Chris was kind enough to mention me for follow Friday on Twitter and I followed the link to his blog again – and was stunned to see that I had written a post this week that is pretty much the same one he wrote two weeks ...
Welcome to this second instalment of the series! This series of articles is aimed at giving you a hold and a sort of “Best practices” to starting any kind of migrations. Whilst each technology or project has its quirks and traps most of the process you’ll need to go through is, roughly, the same. The second article will describe a so called “test run” or, as I like to call it, practicing with duds... Seeing as running a test system in the ground is not quite as disruptive as destroying an actual ...

Is any essential disadvantages of compiling all select queries? What are conditions, when compiling makes whose performance, for how much percentage? World be good to have default on application config level or on DBML level to specify are all select queries to be compiled? And the same questions about Entity Framework ...
