It has been another fantastic year for TechEd North America. I always love my time here. First, I have to give a huge thank you to Ineta for giving me the opportunity to work the Ineta booth and BOF’s (birds of a feather). I can not even begin to list how many fantastic leaders in the .Net space and Developers from all over I have met through Ineta at this event. It has been truly amazing and great fun!! New Orlean’s has been awesome. The night life is hoppin’. In addition to enjoying a few (too ...
I have good news! Microsoft has released the June 2010 Windows Azure Tools + SDK. These new tools extend Visual Studio (both VS 2010 & VS 2008) for Windows Azure development. With these tools you can create, configure, debug, build, run, and deploy scalable web apps on Windows Azure. At first glance what I see as some of the most interesting points of interest are the fact that Visual Studio 2010 RTM is fully supported as well as .NET 4 support. You can choose to build your apps with the .NET ...

It was time to create a new site. I figured VS 2010 is out so I should write it using MVC and Entity Framework. I have been very happy with MVC. My boss has had me making an administration web site in MVC2 but using 2008. I think one of the greatest features of MVC is you get to work with root of the app. It is kind of like being an iron worker; you get to work with the metal, mold it from scratch. Getting my articles out of my database and onto web pages was by far easier with MVC than it was with ...
Yesterday, Microsoft held its flagship launch event for Office 2010 in Manhattan. Today, the Redmond software company is holding a local launch event for Visual Studio (VS) 2010, in Brooklyn. How come information workers get the 212 treatment and developers are relegated to 718? Well, here’s the thing: the Brooklyn Marriott is actually a great place for an event, but you need some intimate knowledge of New York City to know that. NBC’s Studio 8H, where the Office launch was held yesterday (and from ...
We've been working with the Visual Studio 2010 SDK and the TFS 2010 SDK a lot recently to create new Visual Studio Extensions. You can find these extensions in the Visual Studio Gallery. If you're a developer/programmer, you should check it out, they have some pretty cool tools out there. I'd be surprised if you told me you went there and couldn't find any tools that could help you. One of the new extensions Cory and I made is called TFS Auto Shelve. Check out the description and read about it below. ...
*Moved to: Upgrading Team Foundation Server 2008 to 2010I am sure you will have seen my posts on upgrading our internal Team Foundation Server from TFS2008 to TFS2010 Beta 2, RC and RTM, but what about a fresh upgrade of TFS2008 to TFS2010 using the RTM version of TFS. Here is a quick walk through of setting up your Silverlight 4 development environment. The first assumed step is that you have Visual Studio 2010 already installed and any appropriate patches. Then download the following in order and install each. Silverlight 4 Tools RC2 for Visual Studio and Silverlight 4 RTW Expression Blend 4 Release Candidate Silverlight Toolkit - Not necessary, but lots of good bits in this download. WCF RIA Services - This is also not necessary, but you should grab it just ...
Its been a long time since I blogged. Primarily due to Tech Ed India, the ongoing Great Indian Developer Summit (GIDS 2010) and the related travels. However, here is a quick post with a few updates. Visual Studio 2010 RTMed in India during Tech Ed. We had the privilege of having Soma our Senior VP launch VS 2010 RTM in Bangalore, India, during Tech Ed India 2010. With that we also had Silverlight 4 getting RTMed during the same week. Earlier I had written posts around using the VS 2010 Beta, RC and ...

This past Monday, April 12th, Visual Studio 2010 was launched. And on that same day, Microsoft also launched a new line of mobile phone handsets, called Kin. The two product launches are actually connected, but only by what they do not have in common, and what they commonly lack. On the former point: VS 2010 had released to manufacturing a couple weeks prior to its launch. The Kin phones, meanwhile are not yet available. We don’t even know what they will cost. (And I think cost will be a major factor ...

One of the 6 sessions I and Mikael Nitell is running on MSDN Live 2010 here in Norway is about Code Quality, and part of that session goes through the use of Code Contracts and Pex. Both fantastic tools ! They can be used together, but are also completely independent from each other, and each can be used single. Code Contracts has to downloaded separately from VS 2010 (works also on VS 2008). Start looking at http://msdn.microsoft.com/e... . This download is a free download. ...
*Moved to: Upgrading from TFS 2010 RC to TFS 2010 RTM doneToday is the big day, with the Launch of Visual Studio 2010 already done in Asia, and rolling around the world towards us, we are getting ready for the RTM. I have decided to write some articles on using a TFS Build Server. During the past few years I have had the responsibility and challange of keeping one running, and I found out that on some subjects, there is very little to find on the internet. So hopefully my experiences can help others. That is, before VS 2010 build server makes everything we have learnt on TFSBuild so far redundant. ;) The first article is about selectively getting the sources you need to get the build done. Scott did talks on the new features in Visual Studio 2010, Silverlight 4, ASP.NET MVC 2 and Windows Phone 7. Microsoft Learning has announced the availability dates for .NET 4.0 Exams from 2nd July 2010 onwards. Being a MCSD.NET for 2005, My friend and I decided to skip certification exams for 2008 exams aiming towards MCST/MCPD coz we felt it was a mere layer on the top of .NET 2.0. But not so for .NET 4.0. *Moved to: Do you know the minimum builds to create on any branch? When creating projects one of the only ways that you have of proving that it works and is a viable solution is to build it. This is easy when you only have one developer and that developer will be the only one using a solution. But what if you have 2 developers? How do you prove that one developers code works with the other? The answer is build servers. These build servers take specific code away to another computer and build it there. ...
MIX is happening and there is a lot of excitement around the various releases such as the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview, IE9 Platform Preview and few other announcements that have been made. It also takes the mobile development to a new generation and doesn’t force developers to learn different programming language. Along with this, few other releases have ...

I did a session yesterday on Entity Framework 4 using Visual Studio 2010 RC. Unfortunately VS2010 crashed on me 4 or 5 times during my presentation whilst editing code (I resolved it by copy and paste from Notepad!). I was pretty convinced the issue was related in some weird way to the amount of other beta stuff I have on my machine plus a history of various CTP installs of VS2010. However it turns out there is a more fundamental problem with Intellisense in the release candidate. The good news is ...
As promised in the previous post, here is a first look on Visual Studio 2010 RC. i am sure many of you have downloaded the bits already so this is for those who are waiting yet. VS 2010 RC is an upgrade to the Beta 2 that was shipped last year. This build has been heavily focussed on implementing community feedback and fixing performance issues reported. The start up screen looks as below. A little darker compared to the Beta 2 build. You can read my earlier post on First look on Beta 2 here I didn’t ...
Warning: This is my experimentation and cannot be taken as a recommendation ! I gave it to my temptation and installed the Visual Studio 2010 RC despite having a lot of upcoming WCF RIA Services talks. (One is scheduled right tomorrow and it would be disastrous to try anything fancy) Much has been explained around the non-availability of Silverlight 4 Tools updated version for this RC release and subsequently the inability to work with WCF RIA Services and SL4. Infact, Tim Heuer has put up a nice ...

I have been playing with the WCF RIA Services (erstwhile .NET RIA Services) for sometime and found that most of the samples out there focus on Silverlight based applications. While the new WCF RIA Services preview for VS 2010 is awesome in terms of its Silverlight integration, I also wanted to test out on building plain vanilla ASP.NET Applications and using the power of WCF RIA Services to build a middle tier for the same. Ok, to begin with, I already had Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 installed and ...
Well, it turns out that there is a bit of a setup process that needs to be followed to get it working. It’s all outlined in the Visual Studio Team Test blog entry here. Basically, you have to install and patch Windows Media Encoder to get the Test Runner to capture and index video. I know I was puzzled by this and suspect that many of you have been as well. My thoughts and observations of this year’s Microsoft PDC conference in LA. Day 1: Just registered for the conference. They had many reps available to move attendees through the registration process. We arrived early, and had to stand in line for 15 minutes, while all the reps stared blankly back at us; “We don’t open until 7.” Wow.. Great Customer Service. Let me take this moment to comment on the Conference bag this year. ITS A CHEAP PIECE OF CRAP. Literally, it looks like a “reusable” grocery ...

My team is going to start using the Manual Testing functionality available in VS 2010 for one of our larger projects. We started today to migrate some of our manual test scripts over to Test Cases/Test Plans in Test and Lab Manager. We ran into a problem immediately that almost prevented us entirely from continuing to use the product. If you have a Test Case with a lot of Test Steps the scrolling in the Test Case editor in Test and Lab Manager is broken. When you get enough Test Steps so that you ...

I have been playing around with the idea of modeling business rules as a set of small workflows (Flowcharts in WF4). In the application, this would result in small workflows being called a large number of times. I decided to investigate the performance overhead of invoking a workflow in WF4, the workflow technology in .NET 4. Since I am using Visual Studio 2010 Ultimate Beta 2, this also seemed like a good opportunity to evaluate the performance profiler included in this edition of VS 2010. For this ...
