In this blog post I thought I would talk a little about one of my favorite features of VS2010, Intellitrace. Intellitrace is debugging on steroids. In regular debugging session you can see the values of variables at a certain time, but you can’t go backwards, and you cannot see the state of the entire system. This means that some bugs cannot be reproduced. With Intellitrace a log file is created that allows you to debug the file. This is similar to a dump but has lots more information, and when run ...

*Moved to: Do you know about the Visual Studio 2010 Database Projects Guidance?Early on in the Team System (now Visual Studio ALM) cycle a new product surfaced within Team System that was affectionately called “Data Dude”, but had the more formal name of “Visual Studio 2005 Team Edition for Database Professionals”. The purpose of this product was to try and make the database a “first class citizen” in the development world. Read more...Follow my new blog on http://blog.hinshelwood.com ...
I didn’t go to the Microsoft’s PDC Professional Developer’s Conference (PDC) this year because it was, as far as I could tell, a made-for-streaming video event. As such, I watched the keynote about 24 hours after it took place and used my Media Center PC to watch it on my plasma television. And I have to say, the keynote was worthy of the medium. Not only did the Silverlight Smooth Streaming technology deliver a fine HD image, but the content of the keynote itself, merited a big screen, and necessitated ...
EMC provides us with 2 great tools, I have talked about the experience of deploying Scrum for Team System Template Version 3. Now they have released the Scrum Master’s Workbench. What is this tool about? Many times it is challenging for a Scrum Master to keep tabs on the items going on when there are many places to look. This tool allows for us to connect to any Team Foundation Server project and interact with the work items using task board, item list and control project iteration path information. ...
I am just reposting this thread from a MSDN forum since it seems to be unavailable. It was very useful when I was having trouble with my folder mappings after migrating to TFS 2010. Question: I opened VS2008 and connected it to the upgraded 2010 TFS server. Upon clicking any of our Team Projects in source control explorer I get "Team Foundation Error - The workspace MYWORKSPACE;DOMAIN\MYUsername already exists on computer MYPCNAME." Answer: The same local paths on your machine are mapped to 2 different ...
If you are using the Scrum for Team System (aka Conchango Scrum Template), it has hit RTM and it is available for download. First you will need to register and then you will ne able to access the goods. There is also a very well laid out Getting Started with v3 guide, put together by Crispin Parker. Note: Very important to know and consider, is the fact there is no upgrade or migration strategy laid out from v2.2. So you are left to your own devices on that one. There are plenty of discussions going ...
Introduction You have installed Team Foundation Server 2010, you are ready to go. Your client is Visual Studio 2008 SP1, and need to connect to TFS 2010. Here is the story, the steps to configure Team Explorer are almost the same … meaning, you will open Visual Studio, then go to Team Explorer. At that point you will Add an Existing Project, this where we connect to TFS. Except, we get this: Now what?!? We need to install the Visual Studio Team System 2008 Service Pack 1 Forward Compatibility Update ...
Renaming the default custom dictionary from CustomDictionary.xml to an other name – for instance FxCop.CustomDictionary.xml needs some additional changes to work in involved applications. Unit Testing with VS2008 Team System and Moq In order to loop around the software development life cycle, you do really have to do the unit testing. Once you get in this stage, you will realise that you need to get your hand dirty with heaps of isolation and refactoring and you wish the whole team had been practicing the Test Driven Programming. It is vital that you test your application and the more dependencies you have in classes, the deeper nightmare for isolation. Possibly in some cases, bad ...

This issue has popped up for some after having upgraded from Team System Beta 2 to RC. You have remembered to uninstall everything (as Jakob points out here: http://geekswithblogs.net/j... but you still get the following error box: saying Could not load type 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.C... from assembly 'Microsoft.TeamFoundation.C... As you’ve probably noticed if you read my blog, the VS ALM Rangers have been busy the last week or so. Here is a summary of what they have released already and I’m sure there is more goodness to come! · Visual Studio 2010 Quick Reference Guidance: consists of compact cheat sheets for Team Foundation Server (TFS) 2010 and Visual Studio (VS) 2010, addressing the core problem of teams in the field who are unaware of Visual Studio and Team Foundation Server capabilities or have little time to invest ...

Many of my ISVs are ramping up in their adoption of Team System 2010. Many others are finishing or still deep in their rollouts of Team System 2008. Notions Solutions has been critical in helping many of them get up to speed on Team System. Thought I would make you all aware of a great tool recently released for Team System that adds to and complements some key features. The great thing about Notions is that they have deep knowledge of what it takes to stand up Team System and get it implemented ...
I've been renewed again this year as a member of this elite cabal of crazies that call themselves Team System MVP!! I feel really happy today, this is always good to know our commitment to the product we love is recognize by our peers, community leaders and Microsoft. This program has really been a blessing for me in the last 5 years I've met incredibly bright, funny, cranky (at times) and very passionate people that I always look forward to seeing and talking too. My professional career has really ...
Thanks to Ray and Gavin for organising another top EdgeUG meeting in Microsoft Cardinal Place and for everyone who attended my talk on Hyper-V for Developers. The audience had to deal with a huge amount of technical information that I crammed into the hour - hopefully it didn't put them off their pizza. Fortunately the Stack Overflow master and author of C# in Depth, Jon Skeet, was on hand after the break for a interesting glimpse into code contracts coming with VS2010 and C# 4.0. For those who weren't ...
In June we ran a free 2,5 hour seminar at Microsoft on the Team System 2010. It went rather well, so it's being set up again, on September 15th. It's being done as a practical demo case, we've "invented" a problem, and uses the 2010 to solve the problem. In the process of doing that, we're going through the Architect parts, the work items, the build system, coding, branching, code reviews with the static code analysis, testing with the new Test Edition ("Camano") and more. We've done it nearly power ...
Registration for PDC 2009 is now open. If you register by September 15th you can save a hundred bucks. Or you could get there my way: win a contest (hey, I’m a poor developer). As I mentioned in a previous article, INETA has a component contest that prizes a trip to PDC. But, it’s not the only one: Microsoft has announced the Code7 Contest - Code the Power of 7. It pays out great prizes, but you have to take advantage of the technologies built into Windows 7 like Libraries, Touch, Shell Integration, ...
We have run 10 seminars with myself, Mikael Nitell and Jakob Ehn on TFS 2008 during the last two years. These seminars were made from the point of our company's experience with the TFS system. We debated different aspects of it, and showed people how we had chosen to solve the different issues that arose. These seminars took in the range of 4 hours, and we've had around 700 people all in all participating in these seminars, with very favorable feedback. Now in June, June 10th, we, myself and Mikael, ...

Microsoft Patterns & Practices group has just released some guidance around Acceptance Test Engineering. This is fortunate timing for me as I’ve been digging into the new testing tools with Team System 2010 in an attempt to incorporate the full testing cycle into my ALM thinking. Look forward to a few posts coming incorporating this work. Technorati Tags: P&P,Acceptance Test,ALM ...
I just completed my first iteration on a project I was injected into at work. What makes this project interesting is the approach to software development as well as the technology makeup. Many developers wonder what its like to switch from traditional methods and adopt something like TDD or OSS tools like nHibernate, Rhino Mocks, Castle Project, etc. I wanted to share some thoughts and what my experiences have been after completing my first iteration in exactly that type of environment. TDD – Different, ...
Dylan Smith from Anvil Digital will be presenting Tuesday night (June 23rd) on VS.NET 2010! Do you ever deal with bugs that you can’t reproduce? Do you use a lot of manual testing? You won’t want to miss this chance to see how the new features in Visual Studio Team System 2010 Tester Edition can help your team. VSTS Architecture edition has also been undergoing a drastic change, replacing what was a mostly lackluster feature set with some phenomenally useful tools. See how the new Architecture Explorer ...
Thanks everybody who Participated in the event Microsoft Day @ Dhaka, held on 20 June 2009 at IDB Auditorium, Dhaka. It was an excellent gathering of 250+ professionals, specially developers in Bangladesh. Besides the knowledge sharing stuffs, the event was very successful to create a social gathering of technical professionals. I was really found it pretty nice that, I have meet at least 20+ guys there, whom I knew and meet virtually before. The good news for the community is, we will be organizing ...
So, somehow within the past five years I’ve mapped out my life to lead to a point where I’m sitting here blogging on GeeksWithBlogs.net. I never would have guessed it…lol There’s no need for me to sweat it though. I’m a 23 year old IT college graduate that has a full time software development job, an amazing family, a loving girlfriend, and incredible friends. As one of my co-workers recently put it: “I’m livin’ the dream” :) I'm a former employee of iPay Technologies and currently work for Republic ...

Once you have imported a list of work items in excel from a team project in TFS, the excel file always proposes work items from the same team project. It does not seem possible to obtain the "connect to TFS" popup window again, where you choose the team project. This is because the connection is stored as a custom property in the excel file. The answer is to delete all custom properties from the file. Go to the main menu and then: Prepare / Properties / Document Properties / Advanced Properties / ...
Last month (May 2009) Microsoft has released its first beta for Visual Studio Team System 2010 and Team Foundation Server 2010 release, two of the most waited and wanted tools in developer community. From my point of view these two releases are going to be one of the most historical releases, as lots of really cool stuffs has been added with respect to the last version. However, as the Beta 1 releases are pretty infant, there are very limited resources available in the web and community, so I just ...

Back in January, Brian H. Prince from Microsoft interviewed me about the UML features in Visual Studio Team System 2010. Today, he informed me that the interview is finally live on Channel 9.

My last post was about deciding on what Scrum tools you'd be using before you jump into the process. I imagine readers like myself who are new to Scrum or are constantly looking at ways to do it better. So for those folks, I'll say that in the past three weeks I've learned, definitively, that the currently available Scrum tools won't force you into implementing Scrum more efficiently. They're all good tools that require you, quite frankly, to know what you're doing. So I'll try to break this down ...

Visual Studio Team System is getting a new tool: Microsoft Test and Lab Manager. It was codenamed Camano and announced last year at PDC08, but new details have emerged via Jason Zander's blog. The tool will not only be included with Visual Studio Team Test since generalist testers (think domain experts rather than programmers) may not want to install the rather large Visual Studio on their testing boxes. The tool will also be included in Visual Studio Team Test 2010 Essentials and Visual Studio Lab ...

That’s a mouthful. Back in November of 2008 Microsoft shipped the GDR (General Distribution Release) for the Database Edition of VSTS. This update changed the way the database is modelled internally and removed the need to have SQL Server installed locally. You can check out a review of my experience with this release here. The scope of the changes required at that time was such that we decided against updating. I had estimated approximately one full day to implement the changes to our stored procedures ...
