While working with a customer, we had this interesting requirement related to SP 2010 content migration. The migration process would take its own sweet time, but we wanted to migrate people search first. In 2010, when you search for a person it would search against its profile database and show you the relevant results, this is what you would expect. But what if you want the search result to show you a result from MOSS 2007 profile database and when you click on my site of an individual, it takes ...
I have a client that desired to have the MOSS 2007 capability of My Links but in no way wanted My Sites in SharePoint 2010. I took some steps that gave them the capability of My Links by creating a personalized web part that could be linked to in a modal. It worked, However, in addition, they didn’t want users without web admin rights to see the SharePoint ribbon. The result was that admins could use the web part and the personalization data would be kept by SQL in the personalization database. Members ...
I have been working with a client that has several metadata property mappings. One of them being a "Yes\No" FIeld. The client has a "Confidential" field wich is really a check box. If a document is confidential then it is checked off, by default all documents are NOT confidential therefore, they field is un-checked. Well needless to say during a search query on that field, it would say, "error occured" What the "H" is going on here!!?? looking at the windows logs didn't help as it was complaining ...
My first inplace upgrade of a MOSS 2007 farm to sharepoint went pretty smooth. I read the preupgrade documentation and was comfortable with the steps. Since it was a fairly new installation of Moss changes were minimal and I wasn't anticipating too many problems The one issue I got was after installing the software on all of the farm. I went to the first machine which ran Sharepoint 2010 central administration and ran the Sharepoint 2010 Products Configuration Wizard. I received the message that ...

When you try to install MOSS 2007 on Windows 2008 R2, if you are using an installation media that is older than SP2, you would get the following error, saying that “This program is blocked due to compatibility issues” All is not lost though, all you need to do is to slip stream the SP2 updates to the MOSS 2007 Setup. Here’s a nice how to on how to do that. http://blogs.technet.com/se... Once you slipstream the SP2 updates, you ...
It was time of my first onsite client assignment on SharePoint. Client had one server production environment. They wanted to upgrade the topology with completely new SharePoint Farm of three servers. So, the task was to move whole MOSS 2007 stuff to the new server environment without impacting data. The last three words “… without impacting data…” were actually putting pressure on my head. Moreover SSP was required to move because additional information has been added for users apart from AD import. ...
Hello Guys, I am Dipesh Bhanani, An IT Consultant from an MNC. I have worked with many client as a SharePoint Consultant ever since. I have been on various successful engagements deploying Project Server 2003/2007, SharePoint 2003, MOSS 2007 and InfoPath 2007. People have asked me for years why I don’t start blogging. I have come across many technical hurdles in the ocean of SharePoint and resolved them passionately. So I thought why I should not share my knowledge to alleviate SharePoint troubles. ...
I have been using VSeWSS 1.3 since it first became available. As of this writing it is still in the CTP release stage. The previous version, 1.2 is still available, but the biggest advantage of the 1.3 release is support for 64 bit OS which was a prime motivator for me. Also 1.3 now supports publishing sites which was not possible with the previous versions. VSeWss 1.3 March 2009 CTP is available, and is the version I am using for the purposes of this article. A good blog post about the extensions ...

Over three years ago I ran in to a Microsoft server product that I fell in love with. It is enormous, complex, and useful in so many ways. Enormous because it solves many common business problems out of the box there isn't many competitors that can top that. Complex because there isn't just one way to solve most of the business problems with this product. Any solution that you create with the product can be as unique as the client you are implementing it for. Useful because even with all of the out ...
SharePoint has been around for quite some time. I first worked with it in its original version in 2001. And so began a love hate relationship that has lasted these many years. Recently I have been spending a significant amount of time writing custom web parts. Below are a number of notes I have accumulated while rediscovering what SharePoint can do. I don’t claim that these are best practices, only that they have worked for me. Environment General Creating web parts for WSS 3.0 or MOSS 2007 requires ...
This past week I was reminded of the “fun” in which hosting an application within SharePoint can present. We are developing a custom application for our client in which some areas must reside within a SharePoint environment. We did quite a bit of our development in this first iteration within a web application in order to pull things together and present the client with a working end-to-end “prototype.” The architecture is composed of several layers all of which will be “in process” communications ...

I spent the past day trying to figure out why I couldn't log in as myself, Sharepoint would always just say I was logged in as System Account. After a ton of research and changing things I ran into this: To fix this, you must run the following commands: stsadm -o updatefarmcredentials -identitytype NetworkService followed by: iisreset http://social.technet.micro... That solved my problem. I'm using NTLM authentication and ...

If you’re looking for some examples of how to use MOSS as a public facing website, check out Hawaiian Air. They built their website with MOSS 2007 and there’s also a short case study available that talks about some of the experiences creating the solution. I found these links as part of Kanwal Khipple’s recent presentation at the Boston SharePoint Saturday on MOSS 2007 branding. You can view his slide deck from the event here. D ...

So I have been slacking...and haven't posted a blog in quite some time. Apologies! Alot has happened in the past few months including me moving to a different company and switching roles. I am now working with MOSS 2007 so most of my posts will now probably be related to that instead of SQL related items. I'll keep my posts still related to tips and tricks but may dabble a bit in the politics and business decisions of MOSS 2007. In my experience, SharePoint has proven to me that it's not always necessarily ...
I just want to issue Microsoft a simple challenge that could revolutionize their software development process and quality control, make their apps integrate better, and make a world of difference to customers and implementation partners the world over: Get your shizzle together, and start building common modules all your enterprise products can leverage. A great example of what I'm talking about is User Profiles. MOSS 2007 has a very robust User Profiles engine. Commerce Server 2007 has its own somewhat ...
While there are loads of reasons why this can happen, I identified an odd one that, hopefully, will help you if you an encounter an IPConfig hang. Scenario and solution: 1. Start a Viftual PC 2007 Virtual Machine running MOSS 2007 w/SQL Server 2005 on Windows Server 2003 SP2. 2. Open a command prompt and type IPConfig. 3. IPConfig hangs. 4. Break-out of the hung IPConfig command or open a new command window. 5. type net stop mssqlserver 6. type net start mssqlserver This resolves the IPConfig hang ...

\I keep forgetting how to do this so I'm blogging it to help me remember. Back in the days of WSS v2 and SPS 2003, one could use some handy URL parameter passing to edit web pages and browse for or search web parts. My three favorite parameters for WSS v2 and SPS2003 were: To Correct or Remove Misbehaving Web Parts http://server/default.aspx?... To Open the Page in Web Part Design Mode http://server/default.aspx?... To Open the Search Web Part Zone http://server/default.aspx?... ...
I am writing this post using the ScribeFire Firefox plug-in. I am still on the lookout for a blog editor that come close to all the features and ease of use found in Microsoft's LiveWriter - but runs on Mac OS X. I have found some close ones -- MarsEdit and X -- but their big achilles heel is that they don't recognize SharePoint blogs running on MOSS 2007 (sp1 or otherwise). Natch Microsoft would build support in to its tool - no one else does though. And I will be damned if I can find a way to manually ...
Been a while since i last posted - I guess its because of my recent engagement with sharepoint focusing on various Moss 2007 focusing on Enterprise Search and BDC and some WSS. I must say Moss 2007 has come a long way from its predecessor, however, What is the most frustrating issue is the "unexpected error" that you get when you deploy anything. Offcourse, I immediately look for the logs and event viewer the configuration analyzer etc., I can now reproduce this error on demand on any webpart - that's ...
If you keep getting nagged for log ons when using sharepoint this will solve the problem almost 100% of the time. The trick is to use the Windows managed Stored username and password feature. To access this, 1. Simply go into Control Panel 2. Click User Accounts 3. Go into Managed Passwords and click Add 4. Type the URL of the server (without HTTP), for example portal.us.com 5. Enter your credentials and click Ok Now anytime Windows attempts to access ANYTHING on this server it will use the use those ...

It was a nice day out today, so I decided to take my trusty old notebook out with me and work on some comic ideas. Here is what I have so far: Support Calls (hilarious ones related to SharePoint, if you have ideas e-mail me or contact me with them real life fuels the best stuff) Twitter Mockery and Fun Something related to how devs always have a ton of windows open and need a billion gigs of ram, especially when they need a SharePoint VPC Ability to create multiple alerts (user hilarity ensues) Why ...
I'm all about trying new things, because I believe I am ADHD and get very bored at work sometimes. So my boss and one of my fellow colleagues threw at me a couple of requirements for our newest set of sites. We are working on some sites for various offices, which I think will be really cool. Some of the things that they wanted were the ability to see a set of global links and site specific links on the quick launch bar. They wanted something dynamic, so one of the other devs wondered if we could ...
It's not really huge amounts of fame, but I will be speaking at SUGDC Summer Regional SharePoint Conference. I saw a post yesterday on a blog about this event, so I thought hey why not throw out an abstract and bio see if they want me to come out. At this point I had not thought out exactly how I would get there and where I would stay. They responding today telling me that they would give me 15 minutes to speak about SharePoint and AJAX at a roundtable. I was like that is so cool, but how am I going ...
I had an incredible time in Tulsa. Things were a bit rocky at first, because Google gave me some bad directions for Friday night, so I turned around about 4 times just to get the 11th street exist from highway 64. I was a little disappointed with the Doubletree Inn, so I'm sticking with Hampton Inn from now on. $20 for a burger and Ore Ida fries that I could make on my grill at home is insane. Some of the people were really nice at the hotel, but some were just flat out rude. When it was time to ...
I am going to speak about some of the AJAX Page Loading User Controls that I have created. I am going to talk about how a developer would go about converting the SharePoint Application to work with AJAX. Here is my bio and Abstract: Abstract: AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) allows developers to create loading screens easily without a great deal of development in SharePoint 2007. In this session we will walk through how to create various page load events using the AJAX toolkit, Web User Controls, ...
I bought the domain www.mosscomic.com, because I had an insane idea to start a web comic related to SharePoint. I have always wanted to start a web comic, but never really had the artistic skills. I was wondering if anyone would like to help me out with my crazy endeavor. Let me know through the contact form and maybe I can organize a messaging brain storm session in the next month or so. So far I have one other person interested who is also artistically challenged like myself. Technorati Tags: MOSS ...

Last Wednesday was my last day at the university, where I have been working. I am starting a new job for a law firm, taking a little twist in technology as I move from mainly doing back-end development to a far more user centric environment on a large MOSS 2007 project, which is my preferred space. I have enjoyed my time at the uni, but among other things I will NOT miss the nightmare commute everyday. This is the leaving card I was presented with ;-) And a couple bottles of wine, one being my favourite ...
I am starting down a path with Sharepoint (MOSS 2007), so I found a nice MOSS virtual machine download, its only a 30 day trial, but that'll do for the moment. It's nice that it comes all installed etc, just to get a flavour. The virtual machine is also a domain controller - not sure whether there is any specific reason that relates to a MOSS installation! The image also contains SQL 2005 SP1, Office 2007 Pro, Sharepoint Designer and some other bits...check the above link for more details. Back to ...
I came across an interesting item this morning. I need to deploy web.config changes to a MOSS 2007 farm. *Moved to: Installing MOSS 2007 from scratchI am having occasion to rebuild my Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) development server. I was trying to install a feature in MOSS 2007 which has got some Telerik controls (RadGrid, RadWindow, RadComboBox, RadUpload and RadAjax) in it. *Moved to: SharePoint 3.0 and MOSS 2007 Service Pack 1 UpdateI had a number of problems installing SharePoint 3.0 Service Pack 1 and then Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 Service Pack 1.
