I received my replacement Motorola MOTOROKR S9 BlueTooth headphones yesterday from Amazon. You can read my original post and mini-review of the S9s if you aren't familiar with the problem I had with the original set. Kudos to Amazon for getting my the replacement set over two week earlier than promised.

Unfortunately this pair won't charge. I ripped open the cool packaging and plugged them in for a nice overnight charge. and when I went to grab them this morning the LED indicator light was still red. Damn. Shame on Motorola - seems like they have some serious quality control issues. I've tried to charge them again at work with no luck. Damn. I really, really wanted to use them this weekend during a solo Father's Day ride I have planned.

I went ahead and did the Amazon return dance again (I can't say enough about Amazon's service - just top-notch) and I received an email with the following:

"I am sorry that your replacement shipment was also problematic.

As it seems that the problem with this item is more widespread than
we originally thought, we are not able to send another replacement.
We will investigate and remedy the situation with the item; however,
I cannot guarantee when the error may be fixed."

I guess I'm just out of luck, eh?

Well, at least your indicator light came on. When I plugged mine in, nothing happened at all! This is the first and last time I buy a Motorola product.

Mine worked for 2 weeks and during my jog this morning they started changing songs randomly and then the darn upper touch controls stopped working. I futzed with them and managed to drop the volume to the minimum, which makes them useless. Back they go.

I don't have any of the charging issues, but for me this is my 3 pair, and they seemed to be doing good, until yesterday the stupid buttons quit working. i only have volume down button that works.

Ordered a new one from NewEgg and it arrived looking fine.
Plugged it in and it would not charge. The charge indicator light flashes twice green then in short order turns solid red indicating charging however stays lit only 2 or 3 minutes before going out. Numerous trys without success. Called Motorola advised return it and of course pay shipping - the whole thing is very disturbing when buying brand name equipment.

I'm on my 2nd pair. On the first pair my volume up and song forward touch controls stopped working. By the evening, none of the controls worked. This happened when they were 3 weeks old. I returned them and got a replacement. After a week with my 2nd pair the volume up control stopped working. I think I'm done with the S9. Hopefully I can find an alternative...

On a side note, the volume of the second pair got much louder than on my first pair.... odd. I guess thats the story with these headsets. Very very poor quality and quality control.

Mine worked like a charm for a month. Now, I can't get it to recognize with any of my blue tooth items (phone, PDA, computer).

It went from being the best investment every to my worst in no time. What is worse, is that I can't get a hold of Motorola to complain and after a month, I can't take it back to Staples.

Sorry to hear that so many folks have had issues with the S9s. On paper they are really a great product!

I do have an update with my S9 woes... back in July a representative from Motorola contacted me (heard about my issues through my blog) and offered to send out a replacement pair of S9s. I was ecstatic since I was getting no where with Amazon (although to be fair Amazon was a pleasure to deal with and probably did the right thing by not sending out a third set of headphones). I received the new pair in August and until recently had not been able to do much with them (long story). Last week I charged them up (good sign) and began using them again during my workouts. So far, so good. I will report back after a few weeks of usage!

Back in August I also purchased a set of Bluetrek ST1s that I haven't had much time to use. Over the next few weeks I will be alternating between the Motorola S9s and the ST1s during my workouts and hopefully I will have time to post a solid review / blog post on both sets of headphones.

Sorry Craig... both music and phone work for me with one pairing so I'm afraid I'm no help with your issue.

All, I've had the same problem with the buttons not working, the track forward, pause and volume up. As many have reported, it happened while exercising, that day I wasn't wearing the headband that I usually do. I realized I might have drowned them (sweat resistant .. not) so I let them sit and tried them every couple days. Eventually there were signs of progress where the track up button started working then a few days later the pause button started to work and finally after 2 weeks, the volume up button started to work and they functioned as normal. I've been using them for several months since without any problems but today they died again, the same exact way!! This time I was wearing a headband but I guess too much sweat got in there anyway.

Never had the charging problem.

By the way, heavy persperation is not covered under warrantee so I guess using them for exercise as it's sold for is at your own risk. The following from the warrantee exclusions..

(b) contact with liquid, water, rain, extreme humidity or heavy perspiration, sand, dirt or the like, extreme heat, or food;

So I sent a message in to Motorola asking them if they were aware of and/or fixed the moisture problem. They were very courteous but didn't answer the question, only asked a few questions about where and when I got them and whether they got wet. Even though I told them I perspired with them on they said I can return them as they were still under warrantee and they would send out a new pair.

Anyway today, 4 days later they started working again. Apparently whatever sweat does to them is only temporary as both times they returned to full function without any degradation in sound quality. I like them so much and they've come down in price ($55), I'm considering getting another pair so when they do fail I can switch off. Sounds crazy but I've tried just about everything out there and these are by far the best option for exercise, this problem not withstanding.

I'll sure never buy stock in Motorola!! I haven't had any problem with my S9 headset, but one of the rubber ear pieces came off and got lost. Their "solution" is to return the entire headset for a replacement. Great business model---trade in a whole new headset rather than carry 10 cent rubber speaker covers! Hey, I'd pay a buck!
And their telephone system is terrible. I had to call three times because the voice recognition system, or some other glitch, kept sending me to odd extension. I finally just hit 0 and got a person but it completely turned me off on the company.

Same story here with mine....use them when I go running, and all of a sudden they freaked out and randomly started changing songs on me. Then, the volume got lowered to the lowest possible level, and the button to raise the volume doesn't work. Crazy! Just contacted motorola to get them swapped out.

I'm on the second pair of s9's. I love the sound quality and the fact that there are no more wires.....unfortunately this head set is used for working out and I have had the same sound problem. I can't use the increase sound button. Actually with the 2nd pair when it turns on the sound goes as high as possible then I can lower it to a more comfortable level. Looks like a thrid pair is in my future.

I feel your pain. To hell with Motorola. I don't think that I've had a Motorola product that I was happy with since my TAC 2 cell phone.

I was really impressed with the sound when I first got the S9, but it only took one day of yard work in 80 degree weather to cause me to sweat enough to fry the volume controls. I turn it up, it turns itself back down.

I'm trying these out now: http://jaybirdgear.com/

The JB-200's are NICE. Way more comfotable than the S9, although the bass response doesn't seem to be as fully fledged. Other than that, the sound and volume a comparable.

I bought the S9 in November and loved them. They worked perfectly until about 3 weeks ago. The pause ff/rew stopped working. I returned them to the store and got a replacement. Guess what? The BRAND NEW PAIR has the same problem! I don't get it! What is up with these headsets? I LOVE the sound but if I can't pause it when I nned to then whats the point? does anyone know of any headsets with similar quality but without the problems?

Bought an once used S9 from a legit ebayer - not china!

Came in the original box - used once (so he says :D)

This headset made me smile because it was just perfect for my needs

I always wanted to shoot around bball and jam to some beats without getting tangled in wires while moving and jumping around

Just perfect

Ran 3 miles one day

Biked to the court a few days later and balled for an hour

Rode the bike for an hour a few days later

Then my wifey says: hey let me try those

I said: sure thing honey, I am getting you a pair soon so get used to them

She said: hey the volume controls dont work

I said: what did you do?

After fumbling around and realizing it was the headset and not my player or laptop I googled the S9 volume control issue and bam!
Everyone and their brother is having this problem!!

My question is not only: what is your problem Moto?

But also: what the heck is up with all these "legitimate" web reviews and not one mention of this massive problem

Reminds me of an Intrepid I owned a few years ago

Had a 2.7L engine and it died
Come to find out a ton of people had issues with the 2.7 and Dodge refused to recall the motor
Not one motoring editor mentioned this major problem that was happening across the country with Dodge 2.7L owners

And not one editor who reviews the S9's has come back and said: hey Moto fix your problem because you are selling garbage that we recommended - wheres the article updates?

Guess if the editors did that, the freebies would dis-appear!

Nice job to the "professional" editing/review community

Little guy gets screwed again

Consistent issue with volume controls malfunctioning permanently during exercise. Never got this wet with any liquids. An unexpected continuous increasing loud beep occurs and then the volume fades immediately while still connected via bluetooth. Other controls continue to work except the volume controls. This is my fourth unit. Based on the accumulating reports of similar issues in this forum Motorola's problem resolution service model is ineffective and costly for consumers given the high price of the accessory. Will require immediate mitigation and resolution of either good faith repair or replacement and action necessary to investigate electronic issues by Motorola technical support. We will continue to petition until this can be addressed at the State and Federal level for a Class Action Lawsuit due to negligence and intentional deceitful practises to mislead the general public in product claims and lack thereof a suitable follow up plan to mitigate consumer reported issues and concerns. The retail price of this product is equal to or more to a persons one, two, or three day income. Therefore a consumer with such limited income is relying on good faith product claims and superior customer service and technical support.

Hi,

I got my set a week ago and fell in love; until today. Volume up = broken and I'm waiting for the rest to go. Let's see if I can get a new set from my eBay guy.

Cheers and good luck with this great set of headphones that's so prone to failure.

Charging problem, solution?
Maybe I found the reason for the charging problem (several times described: the LED flashes twice green when you plug the cable in, then nothing).
I used a different USB cable and voila: it worked. So maybe the S9 needs a special pin configuration of the cable, there are many different in the market.

I hope that can help.

I'm on my fourth pair of these headphones. First set would fully charge (per green led), but would shut off after 1-2 minutes.
Second set lasted 5 months and then the volume was stuck at low.
Third set arrived yesterday, plugged them in and they charged (per green led), but green led does not go out and will not turn on.

When these things work they are great.

Just some information that I found out. The initial warranty is increased by three months each time that the headset is replaced -- so it is not strictly set at a 12 month warranty.

I have also read posts elsewhere that stated that the outside (where controls are - not in speakers) can be sprayed with waterproofing spray sold at shoe stores to solve sweat from causing problems.

I'm pretty careful with my s9 since I head they had button issues, I always wear a head band that I wrap around them, it keeps them in place and help minimize sweat, but so much for that, as of today the call, volume and rewind buttons stop working.... I dissected the volume control and it is made out of the outer rubber layer, then a plastic film which , holds a metal disc that acts as a pop mechanism for the middle button, then there is a second plastic film, this one has 3 dark areas(presumably metalic) that act as bridges to activate the switches, I was able to clean the ones at the extremes with alcohol and got the volume up and down working fine, now the middle one is a bitch and I never got it to work. The problem with the controls is that they are shit, they are held by glue and even a damp day can affect how the hole mechanism literately "sticks" together. I'm returning mine tomorrow, but I'll be looking at other bluetooh headphones, perhaps those Jaybirds, we will see.

I've had the very same problems with the volume control that the other posters have been complaining of. The volume up button ceased to work 2 months after purchase after they became quite damp with sweat during a heavy workout. Initially I thought that the moisture may have been confusing the touch sensitive controls but the problem is still persisting a week on. Shame.

I just got my pair today was so happy to get them, since when im at work cleaning I can listen to music. They charged up fine and when I went to turn it on the damn green light stayed on wouldnt do nothing not even turn off. I plugged it back in then it worked. So I thought it was just a minor issue..... NOOOOO.. I was listening to music playing a game and it shuts off, damn green light stays on again... then again... then again. In one day. Waste of money -.-

I'm on my third pair, had the charging problem twice now. Plug them in, they blink green, then go blank and don't charge no matter what. So I tried holding the button while plugging it in...Now I get a mysterious MAGENTA light that blinks every 2 seconds or so. Still no success at charging though.

Crap. Awesome product otherwise, it's a shame.

Just found this page after mine stopped working. I bought it in March 2007, so judging by the other posts here it had quite a long life. A supervisor just told me that beyond one year warranty = I pay to buy another one at full cost. They can't repair it. I paid $115 to rent this headset until it broke. I'm thinking of turning it into an art project, as it is so dang stylish even when it doesn't turn on. All I can say is, DO NOT BUY ANOTHER MOTOROLA PRODUCT in the first place, unless you have money to burn or like to be subjected to poor quality and crappy customer service. My $0.02.

I'm so glad I didn't pay money for these POS, I will NEVER EVER buy ANYTHING from Motorola since they don't know how to make something of quality. BTW, these headsets are manufactured in China, so yet another example of cut rate manufacturing at the expense of quality, yeah American industry, showing profit margins trumps quality all the time. So far I have gone through 4 s9 replacements and my replacement s9-hd controls just quit working. Granted the s9-hd last londer then the s9's the HD's still have the same problem. I have been trying to get a reliable pair from motorola for over a year now and they said they will NOT replace anymore s9-hd's for me. It bothers me that I can buy a >$100 headphones and have to constantly deal with them breaking for a year and in the end have nothing to show for it. I wish Motorola just refunded me the money or something b/c this is just the worse product experience I have ever had.

Well I hate to hear that all you guys have problems with the S9, I have the S9-HD and have yet to have a single problem with them OTHER THAN the range on them sucks pretty bad if your not around objects for the signal to bounce off of. I mean like I have to wear my Voyager on my arm as close to the headset as possible and even then have to keep from turning my head away from the S9-HDs otherwise it will lose the signal momentarily. I thought bluetooth was supposed to be good for at least 30ft! In my case when riding my bike out in the open they are not reliable to 1ft! Kinda defeats the purpose of wireless unless you wear the phone on the back of your hat right next to the S9...
Keeping my fingers crossed that they don't develop any of the issues you guys are having!
Gravatar # Short charge life and buggy functions
Posted by colin on 6/5/2009 5:03 AM
How long have your headphones last on a single charge? I'm getting 2-2.5 hours at best when playing music. Is this typical for most people? I've read very few treads about battery life in these things? 2-2.5 hrs to me is too short? I love to hear how long yours last for. The problem with the volume and random song switching I've experienced has happened mostly near the end of the battery life (especially the volume controls). Other times all I needed to do was either restart the other device (my phone's mp3 player) or re-pair the devices.

Mine still work after 4 months of good sweaty use, but I've just now lost the play/pause, call pick up/hang up, and volume up buttons yesterday. Unfortunately, I decided to test the volume down button before the volume up button, and I now have to turn my phone or computer all the way up to get decent volume. $#!7.

I'm going to try taking them apart and figuring out the buttons as I don't have a warranty to lose; I bought them used for $10 on eBay. At least I didn't waste much.

My $100 pair of Motorokr s9 HD David Beckham editions just died. The buttons don't work now and I use these to work out. Since the advertisement says they are sweat resistant and ideal for working out I bought them. The headphones will turn on, but the call button and the volume down buttons _both_ make the volume turn down. No other buttons work _at all_ anymore! So now I have to use my phone to change tracks/turn the volume up. Sucks because I really like these headphones.

My friend also bought the red s9 and his would not charge after about a week of use. Both of us use these to workout so AVOID THIS PRODUCT if you are gonna get them moist. Don't even think about getting them wet!!!

I wish I would have found this blog BEFORE I bought my S9-HD headset. After the first use my headset went bad - sound/button problem. I used them when working out and like so many of you, only the volume down button worked. Plus, my charge was only lasting 1 hour. I tried using the headphones a few more times but it is pretty pointless to use them when the sounds is so low that you need complete silence all around you to hear anything.
I tried using mine in the gym and when bicycling.
Motorola support is pretty useless. After making it through the voice-activated call-screening system I received "help" from a tech who really didn't seem very keen in helping me. My problem is that I bought my headsets when back home in the US, but I live and work overseas. Motorola, for being an international company, does not provide INTERNATIONAL support!!!! When I repeatedly asked to speak with his supervisor, he refused and said they have no supervisors available. He finally relented in telling me that they will ship me a replacement product to a relative's address in the US (great... now I have to wait until December to have my second pair break within a few days!!).
I will repeat the refrain of so many others. DON'T BUY THIS PRODUCT and avoid the hassles of dealing with poor product quality and poor support.

The headset have a serious design mistake on the power plug. I have one and used it for one year, last week it stopped charging. Well I decided to open it and it was almost impossible to believe the USB port is attached on a FLAT CABLE. It's a time bomb, all of this devices will break. FLAT cables are not designed to support such insertion and removal forces and breaks.

I have some pictures on it and send it to MOTOROLA asking for replacement. I'm waiting until now for a reply and I really think they aren't.

It's sad to buy a product that it's not cheap relying on the TRADEMARK and discover the product have no quality.

I don't know if I going to buy MOTOROLA anymore.

Regards

Rodrigo

well, its working now, but it was a real joke to get it working. i had to hold the power AND phone to power on, until the led start flashing in red and blue, so i could pair with my phone. it also cannot pause. other functions are ok.

Yesterday, after several weeks of very enjoyable use out of my S9-HDs, I ran into the "green light" issue. I googled my problem, and I was led to this page. I did manage to solve the problem today, and I can tell you what "caused" the problem for me.

When I charged my headset earlier, I used an old charger that had a short in it. When I plugged it into the headset, I'd wiggle the cord around until I could get a good steady charge. While I was wiggling the cord around the lights would blink rapidly - and then it got stuck on the green light. It's my guess that a quick fluctuation in the power supply causes the green light to get "stuck". Fortunately for me, my headphones were already drained of most power, so I simply let the battery drain for about 24 hours and the green light faded away. I threw away the bad charger and replaced it with one that worked. I plugged the new charger in, and voila, problem solved. I read elsewhere on the internet that some people were "slowing down" the chemical reaction in the battery by placing the headphones in the freezer for several days, and then plugging the charger in, thus fixing the problem. Another strategy involved taking the headphones apart and touching the USB plug / internal wire with a metal object causing a short circuit of some sort which will cause the green light to reset.

Either way, I would make sure that you are using the stock USB charger, that it's not plugged into a power supply that could fluctuate rapidly, and make sure that it is not shorting out in any way. I'll post here again if I have problems with the green light not resetting.
