Watch the Billy Collins Fight...

From my previous post, I researched and sure enough found Collins/Reston fight on YouTube!  As the fight goes on, watch how badly Billy's face is hurt.  At then end, you can hear his trainer (who is also his dad) say "There's no padding in his gloves!!!".

Rounds 1 & 2

Rounds 3 & 4

Rounds 5 & 6

Rounds 7 & 8

Rounds 9 & 10

My Cuz--Irish Billy Collins

If you know me, then you know that i'm a HUGE boxing fan...This is partially due to getting interested in the sport when I was probably 5 or 6 years old by watching my cousin Billy fight on TV.  25 years ago, he fought in a fight that would change the sport of boxing forever.

He fought a guy named Louis Resto (trainer was Panama Lewis) at Madison Square Garden for 10 rounds.  All of this time it has been known that Resto's trainer, Panama Lewis had removed the padding from his gloves and he was actually hitting Billy with his bare hands.

Yesterday, we learned in a press conference given by Resto that the tape that was used to tape his hands up before the fight was dipped in plaster of paris, creating a solid cast around his hands.  During the fight between rounds, Billy was saying that it felt like he was getting hit with bricks...well...this give some explanation to his statements.  After 10 rounds of this brutal and criminal beating, I just want to highlight that Billy was never knocked down.

Sadly, Billy suffered permenant eye damage which prevented him from getting his boxing license to fight or maintain a job anywhere.  Falling into a deep depression, he began drinking and was killed in a car accident soon after the fight.

With knowledge of this, Billy's widow Annie is petitioning the courts to reopen the case.

Read stories about it here and here.

Unknown Server Error: d

Yes folks, I received one of the most abstract error messages from MOSS the other day.  When trying to provision a new site collection (team site site collection, that is), the error message that was thrown by MOSS was titled:

"Unknown Server Error: d".

After checking my usual spots for crazy activity when errors are thrown (event logs, IIS logs, MOSS logs, etc.) which turned up nothing, I tried to provision a new site collection of a different type thinking "ahh...it must be in the site provisioning process...that's it..."  Everything except the Team Site site collection worked as expected with no errors.

So how do you "fix" the busted site collection template?  My solution, while more simple than elegant was to spin up another central administration server (on a server that's also a front-end web server) from the SSP (remember that site collections can only be configured from the central admin server without using custom code).  Once this process is complete, I provisioned the team site-site collection from the new central admin server and it worked like a champ.

After my success with this, I removed central administration from the server that was throwing the error and then reconfigured it as a central admin server.  Once this was complete, I tested the newly configured server by creating a new team site site collection and the problem was resolved.  Finally, I removed the temporary configuration of central admin from the front end web server and my environment is working great once again.

Am I the only one that has seen this goofball error?

DreamSpark...it's about time!

This morning, Microsoft Corp. announced that it will be giving away Visual Studio 2005 and 2008, SQL Server 2005, Windows Server Standard Edition, XNA Game Studio 2.0, and its Expression suite of products to college students worldwide -- and eventually to high school students.

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates announced the program, called DreamSpark, today on the company's Channel 8 site.

Microsoft Sync Framework CTP

I've been hearing rumblings of the sync framework for quite some time now and it has finally been released to CTP!  I've got to say, if this thing "really" works, then it has the potential to change the way that we consume data.  Once I get my home development machine re-imaged (hopefully tonight), I'm going to try to get this thing to work with SharePoint 2007.  How cool would that be!

You can read about and download the sync framework here

Does the "close door" button in an elevator REALLY work?

This isn't really related to technology, but I'm just wondering...I was riding the elevator up to my hotel room tonight and noticed that I really don't think that the close door button is wired to anything.  My current thinking is that it's a conspiricy for us to feel like we are in control of the elevator doors, but really aren't.

Silverlight....FINALLY!!!!!

Ok, so I've been pretty hard on Silverlight here lately.  Yes, a lot of my 'softie buddies have given me grief, but the truth is the truth: Microsoft doesn't dogfood Silverlight technologies enough right now for me to be comfortable.

BUT...I came across a site today that really has some potential.  It is http://www.tafiti.com/.  It is a freaking rocking front end for searching using the Live.com engine.

Well done!
