The Life and Times of a Dev Yes, we're really that weird

The more I use Windows Azure, the more I like it.

We’re developing a health care app, and HIPAA imposes quite a few requirements around the security of protected health information (PHI).

Azure makes many, but not all, of those requirements easy to do.  SQL Azure Auditing simplifies many of the auditing requirements.  The disaster recovery features of SQL Azure are also really nice and meet many of the requirements of HIPAA.

Plus, Microsoft will sign a BAA for Enterprise Agreement subscriptions, which hits all of the physical security requirements.

For us, Azure is a no-brainer in terms of start up costs.  Doing this without Azure would be a nightmare and would be cost prohibitive.

I know of companies that still are spinning up new data centers, but I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would do that now, except for non-critical data.  A private data center simply can’t compete in terms of cost for similar levels of security, recovery, reliability that Azure offers.  When you add to that the ability to elastically scale, using Azure (or Amazon, for that matter) is a clear win.

I’m curious, though, if you spun up your own servers recently to do hosting, why did you make that decision?

Which HIPAA requirements were not made easy by Azure and what did you do for those? Love to read another post.
