I recently blogged
about how Windows Defender updates itself in a different manner from the previous beta (Windows AntiSpy). It seems to use the traditional Windows Update mechanism instead of updating itself through its own interface. And then it dawned on me that this is part of getting Windows Defender “ready for the enterprise.” For it to mature in to an enterprise-ready application it needs to update itself in a manner that can be leveraged by Microsoft’s stable of management applications like WSUS and SMS. One-off updating on an individual workstation basis will not cut the Redmond mustard.
