I had the same problem.
I'm using Vista and VS 2005
tried to un-install and re-install asp.net
I tried to fix .Net 2.0 regestry...nothing worked.
Then i checked my shortcut to VS 2005, and sure eenough, for some reason the 'Run as Administrator' option was unchecked.

I checked it back...and voila....all is good.

I followed that instruction and didn't work out. So, I google it and your blog page has shown me on the first.

I did aspnet_regiis -i and now it's solved.

I was struggling over this issue yesterday, and I was led by microsoft through a maze of its lengthy knowledgebase articles - all to dead ends. Nothing from the microsoft site helped, took me the whole afternoon, stuck on this issue.
Then I thought, maybe I should not limit myself just to official microsoft site, and let Google take me to a few places. Your short and sweet post solved the problem just like that. Your site is better than the entire Microsoft mumble-jumble.

The parameter of the aspnet_regiis is not visible. Could you please provide me with what parameter it should be.
I tried with parameter as '-i' but my problem is not solved. I still getting the error of Failed to access IIS metabase.

If that doesn't work, as the post says, trying reinstalling IIS and .net. It's a fast process so it take you too long. I hate IIS by the way.
