Coffee & Cigarettes , Worst Movie of All Time

As usual, we have rented some movies last weekend. Since I am from Europe and grew up watching European independant movies, I am always looking for different movies at Hastings. I like the big budget Hollywood movies, but you have to keep up with what's going on with low budget movies. Here we are in Hastings, looking for some movies to rent, and my wife rents the movie called “Coffee & Cigarettes”. We check it out, big big names, such as Roberto Benigni, Steven Wright, Jarmusch etc.

What's the movie about? Short stories from Jim Jarmusch that all have coffee and cigarettes in common. It is not about how many short stories there are in the movie, it is about how many of them you can stand to watch. This movie was horrible. Black and white, very amateur acting, and pretty bad lightning and scenes.  One simple word, horrible. So if you like to spend your money by renting Coffee & Cigarettes, think again.

Here's the IMDB page for Coffee & Cigarettes . Enjoy.

It's "independent" not "independant".

"Coffe & Cigarettes" is one of the best movies I've seen in the last few years.
B&W is a plus... Lightning is great...

Magnets have two poles... So does the Earth... Coins have two sides...
It looks as if you thought that your opinion is the TRUTH.

How could it be? If TRUTH existed, life would be so much easier !

So, if you ever read this and "if you like to spend your money by renting Coffee & Cigarettes, think again"... and then, think again... about a whole bunch of other things: black & white, good & evil, true & false, certainty & doubt, life & death, Bush & Us... you know... that kind of crap.

Hey J.
Thanks for the comments. I was born and raised in Europe, even though I can't spell great in English :) I know some about independent movie sector. I totally respect your opinions, but I didn't like the movie. I didn't give much thought about it, and posted an entry on my blog. So no big deal.
take it easy.

Hey guys,
I just got done watching this movie and I thought it wasn't half bad, and veteran movie viewer could tell that the tempo would pick up eventually. Although I do respect the negative opinons, I just think those who post them don't the patience to watch a movie with such subtle humor in the begining (Even though the "No Problem" segment really was crappy.) Besides, I have seen a lot worse movies with a lot more money wasted on them.

Respects,
Little D

P.S. As for the lighting comment, it was an indie film so who cares? you either like it or not.

Wonderful ironies and surprises. Deep humor. In some cases, exquisitly subtle acting. But perhaps a "have to be there" sort of film.

Well, in light of what everyone is saying in regards, I for one enjoyed the film from beginning to end. I will admit that it was slightly boring through a few "vignettes," but overall, it played upon the simplicity of how normalcy is portrayed by fixating the moments on our addictions, off-the-wall philosophical conversations, and the slow pace of our relaxing moments. The more I watched the film, the more I appreciated it because of how life as an adult is and still remains: The busy, fast paced, chaotic, deadlines & ideas, suspenses & business meetings; all work and sometimes play lifestyle that we all live and perform throughout our day to day lives. We live in a society that is more worried about other people think, how we impress those people, and how to get ahead in life so that our children will have a chance to be better off than we are. This movie was, perhaps, an artistic view of how we act in public and don't think/care how others portray us as, at that moment. This movie kind of showed how people entrench themselves in their own private worlds. I hope I didn't ramble on too much of my "opinion" concerning this movie.

I found this film very interesting! Original humor, funny situations showing different world views interacting through given objects they have in common - coffee and cigarettes.

If you always pay more attention to lighting and acting then to the film as a whole, you totally missed the point. Film is art, and should not be measured by technical details or trying to be analyzed rationally.
