Silverlighting... Ramblings on Silverlight and occasionally WPF

What better way to start my first post than to write about how the name Silverlight came about. Not that it's anything new. A number of people *have* blogged about it before, but I don't see any harm in telling the story once more. For all I know, it might be a new discovery for at least some people who weren't aware of it.

Being familiar with Microsoft's penchant for coming up with random bizarre names for its products, (sometimes as code-names, sometimes in the final released products), I never had any clue that Microsoft Silverlight was actually named after a person! Yes, you read that right. Microsoft Silverlight is named after David Silverlight. So who is this David Silverlight and how did the name come about? Well, to answer the first question, David Silverlight is a geek, a very established one at that.

Websites like www.community-credit.com, www.xmlpitstop.com and www.nonprofitways.com are his brainchild.

Now read the story of how the product came to be named after him at his website, in his own words:

http://www.community-credit.com/cs/blogs/starbucks_is_my_home/archive/2007/04/16/Microsoft-Silverlight-_2D00_-What-an-Honor_210021002100_.aspx

It's truly amazing...I mean, I can't even imagine how it would feel like to know that a Microsoft product is named after me, and to see it growing ever popular in the developer community.  As they say, good deeds don't go unnoticed, and maybe it was time for David Silverlight's kindness to the programming community to be rewarded in an unusual way. And that's what happened eventually.
