Google Mail Quota Exceeded

OK - so this wouldn't normally be the most impressive thing to happen with e-mail, but bear with me for a moment.

I sent a message last night to a person and this morning I got a delivery failure notification as shown below:

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently:

Technical details of permanent failure:
PERM_FAILURE: Mail quota exceeded

OK, now on to the geeky part - the account that came from was his Gmail account. I mean you've got tons of space, right?

Even with the cluttered inbox I have I still get: You are currently using 146 MB (5%) of your 2789 MB.

So my question is this to the geeks of the world....have you ever maxed out your Gmail account?

Yes. Today. And even though I have deleted tons of attatchments etc I still get the message that it is over quota.

Maybe it is slow to register because it is a distributed system. Maybe the news that I made space needs to filter through...

I deleted almost everything! Will I be able to use my gmail address or not? The message says "over quota" now for about three weeks, even after all my deleted mail.

You gotta have to empty the "Trash" bin folder. All the msgs you delete go to the Trash bin and stay there for a period of 30-days and automatically get deleted from there fisrt-in first-out basis.

Some mail clients move messages into a Trash folder when you delete them. If this is the case, the messages would still take up space on the server. I would suggest looking for an "empty trash" or similar command, and make sure that the messages have indeed been removed from Google's server(s).
