Holographic storage to overtake Blu-ray and HD-DVD in the long run

Holographic Disc

A computer disc holding 300GB using holographic memory technology will go on sale in 2006 according to vnunet.com.

Holographic Versatile Disc (HVD) storage size makes Blu-ray and HD-DVD optical disc seem tiny in comparison. Early versions of holographic disk storage can store up to 300GB per disk. By 2010, the disks are expected to cost $100 each and store 1.6 terabytes (that’s roughly 1,600 gigabytes) each. (joystiq)

Storage capacities of other up and coming discs format:

  • Blu-ray disc has a single layer capacity of up to 27 GB and a dual-layer capacity of up to 54 GB
  • HD DVD has a single layer capacity of 15 GB and a dual-layer capacity of 30 GB
