Well, the XGameStation is finally finished. I was starting to wonder if it was ever going to come out. I've been excited about this for a long time. Not only do you have a console you can program against, but it is built in a such a way to be a hobbyist console that also teaches you how consoles work in the first place. Considering that I was never into computers when others were having their first C64 or AppleII moments, I have a feeling that this baby is going to cause me to have many late nights. This console was developed by Andre LaMothe and is a pretty decent hobbyist machine. It does cost $199 but they are giving away a lot of “extras“ along with it (like Andre's book “Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus“ among others) that make the purchase well worth it. Go check it out now, and perhaps enjoy many late night hacking sessions along with me.

I trust their will be innumerable tutorials posted here? This thing looks really cool. Love that Joystick.

I honestly think it will be better. It's more from the angle of teaching game programming and console programming from the hardware end. It comes with several free eBooks and comes with complete documentation on how the whole console works and is built. It looks very promising. Considering that I'm not a hardware guy, I am *definitely* going to get this and learn.

Hey TomB -

I hope to post some tutorials on the XGameStation once I get it. However, as you may or may not know, my current development series is long from finished. Now that the Summer DirectX update is out, I am going to be re-writing the current tutorials are up and continue on to finish them. The existing series takes priority over any XGameStation tutorials (although you will probably see some tutorials intermixed in timeline-wise with the current series).

Wish I had the $200 to spend right now. I actually thought Andre's "Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" was pretty decent for learning.

"Tricks of the Windows Game Programming Gurus" is actually one of the free books that are included (in eBook form). What I like about his books is that they are really good resources to learning the concepts that drive actual programming. While the code might not be directly applicable to real-world game programming, it's really good at learning how everything works behind the scenes.

The current deal for the XGameStation includes about $150 dollars worth of books alone, I believe.

Well, Jason - you've convinced me :)

As soon as my first paycheck is in, I'm ordering one of these bad boys... Looks like way too much fun.

Sweet! I look forward to having someone I know with this bad boy too. It would be fun to see what some of the developers from Pagdig think of it (too bad it's been so long since I've met any of them :().

wow this looks really cool. Shame about the 6-8 weeks shipping though. I expect it'll take even longer to get to the UK!

Have you ordered any extras with it? I'm tempted to just go for the whole lot.

Hey Nick! I personally didn't order any extras with it. I am still thinking about buying the Explorer Kit and perhaps some of the blank expansion boards. Time will tell :).

well i've gone and ordered one! I left out the extras as well for now. I'm sure the basic package will keep me busy for long enough.

Congrats Nick! I'm sure all of us buying one will enjoy it immensely. I for one am counting the days until it arrives. But I'm just a geek like that ;).
