MSN Messenger: My bad

I posted previously on how MSN Messenger 6.1 seemed to have 'lost' its upgrade feature that prompts you when Messenger should be updated. I was wrong. I had downloaded but forgotten to update my laptop with the latest update (the entire setup). After roughly a week or so Messenger prompts me with the same old upgrade prompt I used to get before.

I feel pretty dumb now because most likely this was still in Messenger, just hasn't been needed lately due to the jumps from 5, to 6.0, then 6.1 (even though it should prompt you to upgrade from 6.0 to 6.1 and it didnt seem to for me but it could be because I was always on top of the new Messenger releases). I could gripe and wonder why it took them over a week to release the patch to everyone but maybe there's good reason for that. Luckily the vulnerability wasn't a huge security risk but I'm sure if something huge was found they would have patched it that day.

Anyways sorry Microsoft. Thanks again for another great program I use everyday (and works like I'm used to). Feel free to make me look stupid again in the future.

Funny you should post this today... This morning a client-of-a-client opened Windows Messenger and go the "upgrade now to 6.1" message and did.

Well, no, but she tried. She didn't have admid privs so the install didn't work. And niether did Messenger after that.

So, please, continue cursing Messenger as much as you want, it's still funked up royally and cost someone about $100 today.

For some reason, the upgrade prompts don't happen when you think they should. I didn't get the prompt until a week after 6.1 was released. You got the prompt the same day the client-of-a-client did. And she uses Messenger everyday.

I think maybe it has a "check every week" or some similar setting? But regardless of that, the destruction it caused today was uncalled for and avoidable.

Actually, I saw the same behaviour. I wanted to upgrade to 6.1 but found that 6.0 didn't upgrade to 6.1 for a VERY long time. In fact, it upgraded only some time 2 weeks back....strange

I was lazy to the fact that the older versions did do this. When I was on 4.8 it asked to upgrade to 5. When I was on 5 (for the incredibly short time 5 was around) it asked to upgrade to 6.0. In 6.0 I was pretty much left alone, to find out updates and patches on my own.

So from there I kind of went back to the "I must keep up with it if I want to use it" mentality. It used to do much of this for me and I'm guessing that it's eventually going back there. I use this for all freeware programs I have (since the majority of them have no announcements, lists or anything) but have grown kind of used to not having to do this for pretty much all Microsoft products I use.

I think this proves that some people latch on to certain features. When they break or change, it's as if the program loses most of it's value. Everything could be all there but because I have to do something differently, I could have major issues with it even if the change is valid.

This isn't a forum for answers. It's simply a place for me to say whatever the hell I feel like saying.

I seriously thought about deleting your comment and it would have been the first besides spam. Then I thought that if you were stupid enough to post about something 6 months old, maybe this comment should stay up as a reminder of how retarded some people can be.

Thank God this world doesn't revolve around you or what you say. Kill myself? Please. I ain't worth the air I breathe? Whatever. You obviously have a problem with people in general, but if you took the time to understand how it would be if you were the only person on earth you'd realize how retarded that idea really is. There'd be no one to wipe your ass for you, no one to tell you how good of a job you did cleaning toilets, no one to hear you spout on about meaningless stupidity and give you praise for the bullshit that comes out of your mouth.

This is MY blog. Don't like it? Don't read it. If you're going to post another comment, run it through spellcheck first, or go back to grade school. Those of us who understand proper english will have a better time understanding your meaningless babble.

my msn in f***ked! what happens is . . . i open MSN 7.0777 (the official release) and then the two little msn people start spinning. but the problem is, they won't stop! the only way i can sign in is if the "you have xx new e-mals in your inbox" message appears. but even then, it won't sign in. Whilst the icons are still spinning, i have to change my status! this will stop the spinning-ness and show me the contacts box, but the problem is, when it does eventually appear, there are no contacts in it. I have to go to Actions>send an instant message and then select an online person to talk to. So i open a conv with any person . . .and then the msn windows, plus the convo, plus the MSN.exe process all end!!! WTF is going on? is there some sort of patch? I've tried all of the conenctions settings and they say i can connect to MSN and .NET.

i know this post is real long . . . and sorry, BUT I AM REALLY STUCK!!!

thanks
