For website development, I use four screens on my main machine, and another single screen on a separate machine - but I voted for just four ! Ideally, one would have a series of machines running different browser OS combinations, and be able to F5 on a round robin.

2 (a 15" laptop and an external 17" TFT). However, when I work from home I use a 24" on my desktop - I'd happily swap my work setup for my home setup!

One is all you need - but it needs to be a big one. Mine's a 24" 1920*1200 (to match the res on my laptop). It's called "Windows" and not "Monitors".

I've tried multi-monitor but it just doesn't work for me.

I have two and wonder how I used to manage with just one. I would like three.

I find multiple smaller 17" monitors better than a single large sized one. I have 24" at home and prefer my configuration at work with two seventeens.

All are at max res usually but it is useful to reduce resolution on one from time to time for testing.

A pair of 19" flat panels at work running at 1280 x 1024
I prefer my single 22" wide-screen at home (1600 x something), but mainly play games on that

I voted for 2 as that's what I use on a couple of my development machines, but as I use 3 or 4 machines I should probly have voted for 5 or more.

I went for two. But my home setup is.

Notebook + 19inch monitor (which is also shared with Xbox and games pc)

Alongside another Notebook

Hence pretty common for me to be using 3 to get stuff done. There is resarch which shows productivity increasing with additional monitors but then decreases once you get 4 and above. Just can't find the link right now.

I can't do with anything less than two monitors now. I use a 22" 1680x1050 alongside a 19" 1280x1024 at home and in work, a 19" 1280x1024 with my 1440 x 900 laptop screen. Were it financially, technically and physically feasible (and if my wife would let me), I'd happily use 4 or 6.

I'm currently using 2 24" monitors at 1920x1200, but I experimented with a setup with 4 back in 02/03 when there was a round of reduncancies and lots of spare hardware floating around (We were using compaq precision workstations with quad monitor support, if I remember rightly). Because this was "back in the day" the monitors were the size of a small moon, and the desk wasn't really big enough, so I had to settle for 3 in the end.

Always use two monitors. We work on graphics software and being able to see screen output from the application on one monitor while using the debugger on another monitor makes life a lot easier.

Having said that, I'd like 3 really. The 3rd would be used for email, web, and other software I run to do my daily tasks. Then there is VNC into Linux and MacOS. Usually have 20+ Windows open at any one time.

No fair, my setup is not listed, which - in case you are interested - is something I knocked up in the garden shed one stoned weekend after the previous drunk weekend ended with me putting an axe through my 10-monitor setup [some advice: don't try to play Tetris across 10 monitors, it's very frustrating to say the least.]

I now have a beautiful home-made DRPS (Direct Retinal Projection System) surgically linked to my visual cortex, via a pair of ACDCM's (Asynchronous Cranial Dodecahedroid Crystal Matrix) - borrowed those from a passing mothership. Thus I am now capable of seeing twenty screens on each retina simultaneously.

The only problem is getting my brain to interpret all those simultaneous images...it hurts like a b**ch, but Morphine is my friend.

I use quite a lot, as you can see in the photo of me at the office in the good old days:
