Installing Visual Studio 2008 Team Suit on Windows 7

I am installing VS2008 in a virtual environment, so this may not be exactly what you would get, but the purpose is to identify if VS2008 does indeed work on Windows 7 and what the experience is like.

The first problem is that the auto run does not seam to function.

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Auto-Run

This can be rectified by browsing the CD / Image and running setup.exe

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Setup

So far so good.

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Welcome to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 installation wizard

After you have accepted the licence agreement you need to select the installation components.

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Welcome to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 feature selection

I am selecting Full so we can make sure it all goes on, but usually I remove SQL Express as I would add SQL Server developer edition later.

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Welcome to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Installing Components

It’s that guy again :), we need to let this cook for “some time, or considerably longer”…

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Welcome to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Installing Components

Some time later….

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Welcome to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Install Complete

After some 2 hours (remember I am in a virtual computer)

I now have Visual Studio 2008 Team Suit installed…

Windows 7 with Visual Studio 2008: Welcome to the Microsoft Visual Studio 2008

I will need to service pack it and check functionality, probably by working on the TFS Sticky Buddy project on it and making sure that I an still deploy and run on other platforms! That is for another day though…

Hi!

Thanks for the screenshots. I was wondering if you got it to work. Nothing fancy, just checking-in/out you know?

Cheers.1

Don't work here on 7000, The pre-install happens, then it gets half way through the first phase of setup (where you can check the opt to send feedback) and drops out with dependency failure? WTF?

If you have problems with web authoring (Problems wuit the Oficce 2007 system, maybe in spanish? maybe the Automatic Updates?....) you can do:

Run and paste

msiexec /x {30120000-0044-0C0A-0000-0000000FF1CE}

Yes.. Oh My God!! Is Installing!

I have tried the install and it claims that there is a known compatibility issue with sql 2005 so it skips that install. Additionaly, I run into another block trying to install sp1, It doesn't seem to detect hat I have VS installed.

Update I managed to install sp1 for VS. Not sure exactly what the problem was, but I was using the full ISO downlowad so I replaced sqmapi.dll with the one from w7 system32 folder and then ran it.

I also got an error with sqmapi.dll using the VS 2008 pro iso version and Windows 7 rc1, but successfully installed using VS 2008 pro installer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=FBEE1648-7106-44A7-9649-6D9F6D58056E&displaylang=en).

Also saw the sql 2005 compatibility error. Assume may have to reinstall sql 2005 express or dev.

This could be an incompatabiltiy with a component added to your project or with the debugger. Try setting your program to x86 only...

Hi,
That is nice to see that there is not a major problem installing VS2008 TS on Win7
I hesitated to install VS since SQLServer requires a little bit complex installation for Win7

Well I have VS2008 installed with SP1 on my Windows 7 machine. When I create a new website project, switching to the "design" mode of the page I am working on causes VS to hang. Did anyone else experience this behavior? Please email me if so as I do not check this forum often.

Guys, just want to ask. Why am i getting a blue screen halfway during the installation? Mine is Win7_64bit build 7600. I only have 2gb ram, and no dedicated graphics. but the os has been doing fine on normal use. i only get the blue screen of death when i install visual studio 08ts.
