Not realy installing updates, more like unpacking...

image_thumb2

Ah, the usual fun... Good thin this is on a dev box otherwise I would need to be restarting services out of hours...or just tell my users it was a tempourary glitch smile_wink

image_thumb4

Got loads of options, but no way to change them...typical service pack build of the base installer...Not a problem with me, familiar. Makes those production guys feel at home.

image_thumb7

Well, first attempt failed. I will try a reboot and see if there are any pending updates or just general trash interfering. If you have ever had to read a SharePoint install log, you will know that they are next to useless. Roll on TFS install style logs for SharePoint. Hint, hint...

image_thumb5

Uoh..Now this could either be really bad, or really good. I just tried to run WSS 3.0 SP1 again and I was told it was already installed...smile_sarcastic

UPDATE:

Check out this post for a solution that fixed my problems...

I was getting exactly teh same errors as you are. I tried on the dev server, and it just keeps failing. I tried runnign the Config wizard, and it fails every time. Did you figure out why its failing? - Raj.

After much research I found that at least one problem was my virus software. McAfee does not support MOSS 2007 and you need a specific version to support Sharepoint Portal Server 2003:

Service Pack 1 has broken WSS 3.0 on my server. Microsoft has done it again. You would think they might do some QA on these service packs before they release them. : ( I suppose this'll cost me another $250 for a support call.

Service Pack 1 broke WSS 3.0 for me too- cannot connect to configuration database. Problem seems to start with the service inability to login to the STS_Config database.

I got the "There are no product affected by this package installed on this system" message. It was because my install of WSS was a beta. I had to uninstall WSS and re-install before I was able to apply SP1. No issues applying SP1 on new installation.

After accepting the Conditions, i get the Error:
The detection failed, this can be due to a corrupted installation database.
But i installation works fine. There are no problems on this installation. Some Ideas?

OK, I have 2 SharePoint servers. One is a Portal and one is a Web Content Management System (Publishing). I installed SP1 on the WCMS without a problem (this was a fresh install of the RTM version of SharePoint). But on my portal, I also get the error above: "There are no product affected by this package installed on this system" (this install was originally the beta Technical Refresh, which i upgraded to the RTM as soon as the RTM was released) ... Why would I be getting this? I know I am running the RTM version now... Any help would be appreciated...

Thanks
Steve

With thanks to Fadi Noja from the MSDN forums, I had the same issue and this fixed it.

psconfig -cmd upgrade -force

then run the config wizard after it finishes.

Hey Rob, thanks. But not working. When I run the command I get:

"The upgrade command is invalid or a failure has been encountered. Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products and Technologies because the upgrade type is not supported or was not specified."

Any ideas?

Thanks for the post but...

...I get the same as the guy above me.

"The upgrade command is invalid or a failure has been encountered. Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products and Technologies because the upgrade type is not supported or was not specified."

And to install SP1 successfully on multiple servers in a farm (2 web servers, one indexing, one Search Query) is just to forget...
And if it fails once, it says Srvice Pack already applied (or something like that). When I check versions on dll's or through Add Remove Program it clearly shows that no files were updated!

Hi,

Have got exactly the same error during the installation of WSS SP1 - I'm running WSS3.0 (now SP1) in a dev environment, with SQL 2005 BackEnd. This is a single server implementation.

When I come to run SP Technologies Config Wizard, I get the configuration failed screen, Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products and Technologies.

"An exception of type Microsoft.SharePoint.PostSetupConfiguration.PostSetupConfigurationTaskException was thrown. Additional exception information: Failed to upgrade SharePoint Products and Technologies."

Tells me to check the logs.....Yeah, like they help??

Any suggestions? - Thanks

You might want to also try this:

Click Start, click Run, type cmd in the Open box, and then click OK.
At the command prompt, type the following lines, and then press ENTER after each line:

cd /d %commonprogramfiles%\Microsoft Shared\Web Server Extensions\60\Bin

stsadm -o upgrade -forceupgrade

Let me know how it goes.....

I am also having same problem after installing service pack and ran

stsadm -o upgrade -forceupgrade -inplace

Error is this.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

It seems to have to do with the configuration database.

Make sure that the username you're logged in with has permissions to run stsadm commands. (i.e. administrator) Otherwise you'll see those "Object reference" errors.

The username must also have permission to the DB.

My event viewer was throwing errors in related to a b2b install was detected so I ran the following command:

psconfig.exe -cmd -inplace b2b -force

then I ran the config wizard again and all was well. Might want to check you application event viewer and see if you need the b2b or the v2v

also dont forget that psconfig -help is a great way to figure out how to use it

oh and one other thing i noticed was the my directory for the bin for wss was different it was acuatally
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\web server extensions\12\BIN

you might want to try navigating via windows explorer or just run a search for psconfig.exe to find the location of this exe on your system.

Anyways I hope this helps.

I had the situation where when i upgrade to sp1 it failed and i tried the stsadm utility, The utility itself failed and atually blue screened my machine. Out of options I rebooted, re-ran stsadm with another fail but it did actually do something because i was able to run through the sharepoint configuration upgrade manager and my site is up and running again. I cant explain it but it worked........
Overall my experience with sharepoint 2.0 & 3.0: take a backup and do whatever a logical person would not do and you will be ok.....and Microsoft kb articles are useless

G'day Fadi - your advice to Klubell
"stsadm -o upgrade -forceupgrade -inplace"
worked for me. I thank-you both for your assistance.
My user unknowingly would like to thank-you too.....

Hi, am having a similar problem. Installing the SP1 of WSS 3.0 failed, then I tried the command stsadm -o upgrade -forceupgrade -inplace
But this also shows failure. The error in the upgrade log is
Action 3.0.9.0 of Microsoft.SharePoint.Upgrade.SPIisWebSiteWssSequence failed.

[SPManager] [ERROR] [6/18/2008 3:16:17 PM]: ReflexiveUpgrade [Microsoft.SharePoint.Administration.SPIisWebSite] failed.
