YEAH!!! Visual Basic 8.0 it is!

As a VB'er, I am SO happy that the name of Visual Basic (of which I am an MVP for) has changed from Visual Basic .NET to Visual Basic 8.0. This info comes according to Robert Green's Visual Basic Blog and Panopticon Central. I have posted about this in the past here and here.

For me, as a writer, it was ALWAYS very annoying to write “Visual Basic .NET” over and over again. Then ... was it “VB .NET” or “VB.NET” ... geez. I am going to love writing “Visual Basic” or just “VB”. How wonderful! For me, names mean a lot. Visual Basic now refers to the wonderful language that it is today for building everything from enterprise applications to basic ASP.NET pages - but at the same time, there is the connection to the powerful history of the language. GO VB!

I understand the need to "de-.NET" everything, I'm definitely not keen on this particular change. The term "Visual Basic" has a lot of bad baggage that shouldn't be thrust upon .NET developers and code. More:

Even the abbreviation VB8 is easier to type than VB.NET.

- The only reason that VB.NET was called "Visual Basic" is that Microsoft has a copyright on the product name. They are entitled to call anything they want - even a new model car - "Visual Basic" should they so choose.
- However, calling it VB, whether you mean .NET or "VB8", doesn't make it that. Pre .NET, VB was the premier RAD tool available; starting with .NET, it is simply another wrapper for the code-bloated OOP junk that C programmers have had to deal with for a long time.
