The new Zune software WTF

Monday, December 10, 2007 8:58 PM

So I am happily using the new Zune software, ... um sorta ... and I have just decided to move all of my files to a new external hard drive. Well it lost a few in the process (lame) and in the old Media Player software if it errored on such a thing it would let you go find the file again. Nice right. Yeah, not so nice on the Zune software. Here is there help page for the topic.

Things To Try

Try one or more of the following:

  • If you are trying to use a file in the Zune software library, the file may have been moved, renamed, or deleted from your computer. If you moved the file, try moving the file back to its previous location. If you renamed the file, try renaming the file back to its original name. If you deleted the file, try retrieving it from the Windows Recycle bin. If the problem persists, delete the item from the library (right-click the item in the library, and then click Delete).

  • If you are trying to use a file that is stored on another computer, you might not be connected to the network. Verify that you are connected to the network, and then try again.

  • If you are trying to use a file that is stored on a server, try again later. The server might be busy or temporarily unavailable.

Thanks, that helped alot. :( Why can't I just change the path?

# re: The new Zune software WTF

Yeah, welcome to the new world of "Software for Grandma." Many programs are like that these days. In a trend that is to me, and should be to many others, frightening, software products are being dumbed down in an effort to make them easier to use for untrained people. All that sounds well and good, except you don't have to remove more control in order to give less control. Nothing would be wrong with the software trying to handle all those things, but for Pete's sake, give me the option to change the information you are storing in your application data repository! I think too many developers think they know more about how we all use our computers than we do. Its a trend that is driving me crazy... 1/16/2008 9:15 AM | Russ McClelland
