Saving SNL

I was just talking with a co-worker, and we came up with the trifecta line up that will save the SNL season:

Justin Timberlake (MUST have Jimmy Fallon guest-star for the Bee-Jees skit)

Christopher Walkin

Alec Baldwin

If SNL simply rotated these three for a whole year, I guarantee ratings would go up...and so would the quality of the content.

Oh, and bring back Chris Parnell, Haratio Sans, and for the love of God bring back Tracey Morgan!

I agree that the writing on SNL these days is such that if the hosts are good, you might as well forget it. The best episode I've seen of SNL in years was the one last year with Steve Martin and Prince. That was when I realized that the only way that the show was any good these days was if the host was really good. I don't think it used to be like that - I think the writing (at various times in the show's history) was good. But these days, only a good host can save it. I agree that the host often makes or breaks the show. Hosts can fall into a few categories: super famous (Robert DeNiro), funny (Dane Cook), weird (Hulk Hogan) and ex-SNL (Wil Ferril). If you don't fall into that category and your just the celeb of the week, it usually fails. With that in mind I would love to see Jack Nicholson, Jon Stewart or Steven Colbert, William Shatner and Bill Murray wrap up the season. 4/18/2007 7:08 AM | Scott Kuhl

Yeah, they've seemed to have defaulted over the last few years to matching hosts with movie premieres...even on the re-runs!

William Shatner would be money...what would be really great for a special would be to bring the best of the old-school cast back as the "main" cast for a night: Steve Martin, Bill Murray, Dan Akroyd, Susan St. James, Jim Belushi (as a hommage to his brother), that guy with the long hair who did the weekend update stint for the longest time...man, that would be comic gold...or at least do a rotation where they host over a couple of months.

But again...not sure what the payouts are like from the movie studios/record companies to have their stars sell their upcoming projects and whether Lorne would be willing to give that up.

I think SNL's season will be saved if they try to get Dane Cook, Will Ferrell, Nick Swardsen and Chris Rock. That would be nice.
