Looking for Citrix/Scanner Insight

We've got some thin client devices running Windows XP Embedded (XPe). These devices will be accessing a server using Citrix program neiborhood. One of the devices connected to the thin clients is an HP 3050 printer/scanner combination. Printing, no problem...got it working. Scanning...now that's an issue.

According to WYSE (thin client device manufacturers), in theory scanning should work. But it doesn't...semmingly not without the HP software installed on the thin client, as the scanner needs the software to render the image.

Has anyone got a similar setup working, and could maybe point us in the right direction?

Citrix claims that PS4 works with scanners, but we sure couldn't get it to work -- unless you call having to re-boot your servers several times a day working. What we finally settled with is RemoteScan, a 3rd party application that works perfectly, works with all the scanners we tested with (Fujitsu, HP, Canon, etc.), and works with earlier versions of Citrix as well as Terminal Services. Find them in Google by searching for remotescan

Hey Shane, thanks for the post.

We finally figured out how to get PS4 to work with scanners, but it took reading some fine print.

Citrix PS4 will work with scanners...as long as the client licenses are the Advanced version and not the Standard. We looked at Remote-Scan, but for the amount of scanners we're rolling out (50) it wasn't cost effective so the client is buying the upgraded licenses instead (still a hit, but not as bad).

If it were only a couple, we probably would have looked at running with remote scan or something like it.

Hey Shane,

Just an update: we were successful in getting it to work with a Brother printer/scanner device. We had to install the Brother software on the Citrix server, upgrade the licenses to Advanced, and we used a shareware program to help facilitate the Twain redirection, and we were able to scan. Slow as hell mind you, and we're still testing it out a bit more to ensure that its acceptable for what they want, but we're 99.99% sure we'll be rolling with this solution.

Please note: w/the RemoteScan licenses if the machine crashes orneeds to be replaced they will not allow the license to transfer. this became a HUGE issue when we were moving devices to the neoware solution and they were very un-accomadating.

After a full month of trying, we finally have pulled the plug on the Citrix scanner 'solution,'
I read all the fine print, and it *sort of worked*

but arrggg...... going back to the 3rd party software, since remote scan works with the all our users scanners, not just a few cruddy ones. 1/24/2007 3:15 PM | AlisonQ

RemoteScan alows transfers of licenses as long as the version of RemoteScan will support the new , replacement hardware. Versions of Citrix and Windows come out often, as do scanner models, and RemoteScan customers who have older versions of the software will need to upgrade before they can transfer their licenses to new hardware platforms.

How has remote scan been working for everyone? Our company has over 50 clients that have over 75+ users using Citrix. Everyon needs to scan, we would like to recommend RemoteScan but would like to know how its working out for you all. 10/22/2007 9:05 AM | Igor
