  • From Think Geek:

Sometimes it's fun to turn stuff off and on. But doing it everyday can get pretty tiresome and old. The Mini Power Minder can help. It has two built-in outlets - one that connects to your PC and the other to your peripherals (via a power strip). The Mini Power Minder also connects to your PC via a USB cable.

When you shutdown your PC the USB cable will no longer have power, letting the Mini Power Minder know to shutdown power to the secondary outlet. If you have your peripherals connected to this outlet they will be turned off along with your PC. The same process works when you power-up your PC.

But why does it need a USB connection? Surely you can tell from the power socket when the primary device is drawing power?

Devices that use a standby mode (TV's, etc) won't work that well -- they tend to power up into standby rather than fully on, so I would still have to push the standby (power) button to get them started.

I have no idea, but with a PC, and a bunch of peripherals, it works great, I didn't try it without the USB cable. It's under the desk in the back, and it saves me from trying to shut off 2 power strips with my feet after a long night of work, so I am not complaining!
