I'm a diabetic. It sucks. I've been diabetic for (hmm... lessee...) 12 years that I know of. Up until now, it was controlled by diet and medication.
Ok that's not entirely true. It would have been controlled by diet and medication, had I actually bothered to diet and take my meds properly and check my sugars ever. I eat too much of the wrong stuff. Sometimes I drink a beer or three. I forget to take my pills sometimes. Basically I haven't been taking it very seriously and now it's kicking me in the ass (again.)
Sorry about that Mom. I knew my sugars were getting a little high, because I was feeling like complete hell for the last month or so. Couldn't quite pull off those all-nighters anymore. I just had my 38th birthday and figured it was about time to find a local doctor since my meds were running out and I had just moved here a few months ago.
So, long story short, my sugars were around 380. That's high. (Ok, that's stupidly high...) It makes me tired, irritable and sometimes confused. It makes remembering stuff really hard too. (Like remembering to take pills, not drink, etc... I know, I know... excuses...)
So, the damage has been done. I'm on insulin now and likely will be for the rest of my life. (Actually, insulin AND meds... oh joy.) I'm still working on the diet part. (Yeah... I know... but cheeseburgers are sooo good.) I've been trying to dodge the insulin "bullet" for years now and it finally caught up with me. Fortunately, my new regimen isn't nearly as bad as a lot of folks. One shot, once a day, that's it.
Travelling should be a real hoot. It's not just that I'm annoyed at having to take insulin, it's all the other crap that goes along with it. Glucometer, strips, lancets, insulin (which needs to be refrigerated), syringes, alcohol wipes, etc...
I guess you could say this is my public testimony that I'm gonna do better. Promise. Still working on that memory problem though, so if you see me at the MVP Summit don't offer me a beer (or cake apparently...)
So yeah, this sucks, but I have nobody to blame but myself (and my good buddies Mr. Woodchuck Amber, Ben & Jerry and Snickers... Pizza Hut, Capn Crunch, Hershey, Reeses, etc...)
