My Articles

Well, it's going on week #3 with laptop performance issues.  I completely rebuilt the system and put minimal software on it (but did reapply McAfee) and guess what...still slowing down!  It's insane!  So I am trying something new.  My laptop was the only laptop that did not participate in the company domain.  So I had the network administrator join it to the domain yesterday.  It's too early to tell but I'm now using my domain account on the machine so I'm spending time getting that up to speed.  Thankfully, I did not spend too much time reinstalling and reconfiguring software.  I installed the basics and imported my email.  I installed Office(R) and a few instant messenger applications.

Thanks a bunch to my wife who gave me an iomega(R) 20GB mini USB drive.  It has really saved me on backup time.  I can carry it with me and restore from any location.  It is really small and has no external power.  Instead, it relies solely on the USB cable for power.  iomega(R) sells 40GB and 60GB models as well. (Hey, I wasn't that good this year!).

Anyway, I am hoping that, regardless of the status of the machine, I am back in the blogosphere.  I have many things about which I want to write so I hope I can get caught up on some things.  Thanks for hanging with me!

See if your heat sink fins are gunked up with lint / dust. It's a common issue with laptops. I clean mine out every 6 months and am always surprised at how much junk gets in there. Glad it's helping to keep my house clean!

Thanks for the suggestion. I already did clean them...they were gunky. This thing does get hot. In fact, I have a USB fan (I know, I know...geek) blowing across the monitor base. It gets REALLY hot.

I am leaning on hardware issues with the video card right now. I have the latest drivers and BIOS for the RADEON 9700 128Mb RAM. I run it at 1920x1200 (default) so I'm used to it getting hot.

It's definitely possible that I let it overheat and it cause some hardware issue. I plan to call Dell tomorrow and reopen this case. Wish me luck.
