My Blog Friends

This email was sent out to the members of the San Diego .NET User Group.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As the year draws to a close, we wanted to review the growth in our user group over the past year.  In 2004 we became a world class user group, and our community in San Diego has a lot to be proud of:

-          We received official IRS 501c3 status as a non-profit organization, making us the second .NET user group in the country to do so.

-          We held 3 day-long conferences and 11 main monthly meetings.

-          In conjunction with TechEd, we organized and led a “super user group meeting”.

-          We launched and held regular Special Interest Group (SIG) meetings: Beginner’s SIG, Architecture SIG, ASP.NET SIG and our newest SIG, the MCSD Study Group.

-          We gave away MANY MANY thousands of dollars worth of books and software that were generously provided by sponsors.

The new year looks like it will be equally exciting as our meetings plans begin to take shape.  In January, we’ll be giving away an Xbox at the main meeting.  Day long conferences are planned for March (with a focus on Yukon) and September.  The SIGs are growing and have the resources they need to thrive.  We’re considering additional “road trips” as the launch of .NET 2.0 approaches.  All together, we’re expecting a total of about 55 meetings in 2005, plus some special events.

On behalf of Board of Directors and our Steering Committee members, I would like to thank you for your support over the past year.  Also special thanks to the many people who volunteer on the steering committee, the board, and other committees.  Our user group has become the premier source for peer community learning and networking in San Diego, and we couldn’t be doing this without everyone’s support and participation. We look forward to your participation and your help during 2005 in continuing this exciting growth in our community.

As always, we welcome your comments and suggestions.  We can be reached at mrelations@sandiegodotnet.com or directly to the undersigned.

Sincere thanks and best wishes for a great 2005,,

Brian,

When you have the time, I'd love to talk to you more about your experiences with making your UG a 501c3. I'm heading in that direction and could use all the guidance I can get.

Chris,

I've been speaking with Dan Wygant (Huntsville, who has 501c3) and Steve Hahn (San Francisco, right behind us in the process) about putting together a white paper for other UGs that want to follow this path. It will happen, but not in the near future, so shoot me a private email and we'll schedule a phone call, I'd be happy to share my experiences and help make your path as smooth as possible.

Brian
