Podcasts and my Pocket PC

Last week, I saw this wild fire running through the blogs about podcasting.  I have a Pocket PC--perfect.  Of course, I ran in to problems right away, not the smallest being that Windows Media Player cannot auto-sync content with my Pocket PC (IPAQ 2210).

Looking on the web, it was suggested to use the file sync feature of ActiveSync.

However, there is no option to copy to a flash card, just to /My Documents which is in RAM. According to Microsoft you can adjust the registry on your device and desktop to change where the files will be stored.

On the device: I used a registry editor (PHM Registry Editor) to set the following values to point to a directory on my compact flash card (\CF Card\My Documents\Podcasts):

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\FileSyncPath

HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\NoSubFolderIn

On the desktop: I created a registry file to change the appropriate values.

REGEDIT4

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\<deviceid>]
"NoSubFolderIn"="\\CF Card\\My Documents\\"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\<deviceid>\Services\Synchronization]
"DeviceSyncFolder"="\\CF Card\\My Documents"
"Briefcase Path"="C:\\Program Files\\iPodder\\downloads\\"

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners\<deviceid>\Services\Synchronization\Objects\File]
"Display Name"="Podcasts"
"Plural Name"="Podcasts"

[If you want to try this on your PC: change “<device id>” to your 8 character hexadecimal number for the partnership you want to change and if you are using an aggregator other than iPodder, change the “Briefcase Path” to suit.]

Now, I’m down to two problems.  First, iPodder has no file management so my podcasts will multiply with no end in sight.  I think I can create a scheduled task to remove files older than a period of time from that directory each night.  However, I cannot figure out a way (in Windows XP) of deleting old files.  I may have to write some code to do this.

The second problem is that ActiveSync says my podcasts are not synchronized, even though they are.  At the current moment, I’m stuck with a weird status display and the constant resynchronization of my podcasts.

If anyone has any workarounds or solutions to these or even a better way to use my Pocket PC to listen to podcasts, please let me know!

You can avoid all this syncing-problems by using a cardreader an configuring iPodder so that it downloads directly to the card inside the cardreader.

I'm hoping not to have to do that. I'm too cheap to own a cardreader, and the whole idea behind podcasts is to appear on your player without fuss.

Use regedit to surf to:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows CE Services\Partners
If you have only one Pocket PC, you'll see a single key which is a 8-digit hexadecimal number--that's your Device ID. If you more than one number, you'll have to experiment to find which one it really is.

Look for a program called PlaylistSync, I think it might do just what you need.

Thanks, PromoGuy! PlaylistSync works as well as I originally intended. I couldn't use the link you sent me directly, but I could download it from the author's site:

Erwin, I'm really looking forward for the Pocket PC version of Doppler. Please have a setting to only sync files that are less than a period of time old. Right now, with my solution or PlaylistSync, I have to manually delete the old files on my PC to save space on my IPaq. It would be awesome if it only synced things less than a week old, and deleted podcasts on my IPaq older than that.

Check out MobSync (freeware) http://www.interq.or.jp/punk/doino/home/software.htm

It syncs any folder on your PC to any folder on your Pocket PC. Freeware.

I have to agree that it would be great to do the sync'ing directly on the ppc BUT sync'ing large amounts of data over activesync plain and simply sucks. It takes ages and it's pretty unreliable when sync'ing large files. This sometimes results in having to sync'ing big files several times before they end up on the ppc/flash card correctly. A lot of ppc cradles use USB1 this is one of the reasons why it's so slow, activestink is another.

Card readers are really cheap these days. I ended up going out and buying a USB2.0 internal card reader for 13 euros! (about 15$) I suppose anybody can afford that? (a couple less drinks at the pub and Bob's your uncle)

Now in the evening all I do is pop in my 1gig SD card in the reader and the computer automatically syncs all my new content to it and removes old stuff etc.
In the morning I take out my card (just like getting the newspaper :P) and pop it in my ipaq and I'm on my way with all my mp3's, podcasts and videos.

I use a freeware program called SyncBack which is scheduled to run 11.00PM at night. instead of taking a couple of hours I can now sync a couple of hundreds of MB's in a matter of minutes (2 to 5 mins)
I just love it.

Before I sometimes had to wait +/-16mins to upload a 80MB video or mp3 audiobook via activesync, with the chance of it screwing up halfway and I having to start all over again. now it takes me a minute, maybe two. :)

SyncBack is a mirroring/backup/sync'ing tool which is very customisable and a great tool for this kind of thing.

My setup is as follows: I just made a dir (SD), in there I have 3 dirs (podcasts, videos, music) when my podcasts are finished downloading I just choose a bunch I like and just drop 'em in the podcast dir after that I just forget about them.
(alternatively you could just have your rss aggregator download the files directly to the 'podcast' dir)
Same for videos or mp3's I want to listen to on the go. Then at 11.00PM SyncBack automatically synchronises all the new data with my card replacing the old content with the new stuff. SyncBAck has quite a few options and filter you can configure to have it sync the way you like it.
Personally I don't like the idea of the computer deleting stuf based on when it was downloaded since I often have some shows from a couple of weeks back which i haven't listened to yet, but that's just me.

Consider using PocketRSS as this handles audio enclosures. giyf
