The opinions expressed within are my own and should not be attributed to any other Individual, Company or the one I work for. I just happen to be a classic techie who is passionate about getting things to work as they should do (and are sometimes advertised and marketed as being able to?) and when I can I drop notes here to help others falling in to the same traps that I have fallen in to. If this has helped then please pass it on - if you feel that I have commented in error or disagree then please feel free to discuss with me either publically or privately? Cheers, Dave

Thin Clients, VDI and Linux integration from the front lines.... Raw and sometimes unedited notes based on my experiences with VMware, Thin Clients, Linux etc.

Now some of you may recall that I recently heard a rumour that Citrix were definately prepared to be somewhat flexible on their pricing (especially if you mentioned that you might be considering something like Ericom instead?) well now it appears that they have taken that somewhat further?

OK, so first of all the Good News - this includes one years Subscription Advantage (So you should also qualify for the next release?) AND also allows you to upgrade from ANY Citrix Server product, even goinig back so far as the Winframe 1.7 and up product.

Bad news is it's only for EMEA, you can only order the same number of CCU as you have now and it will only run till 15th of September as well as:

• Have not upgraded to Citrix Presentation Server 3.0/4.0, and

• Are not current members of the Citrix Subscription Advantage program

Now for some people the next question they will probably want an answer to is:
What are the benefits of upgrading? - so I've posted that here as well

Citrix Presentation Server 4.0

With Citrix Presentation Server™ 4.0 you’ll enjoy more satisfied users, increased IT service levels and an organisation that’s more efficient, productive and readily adapts to change. By upgrading from a previous Citrix® MetaFrame® platform to Presentation Server 4.0, you will acquire significant gains in performance and scalability as well as increased end-user productivity and satisfaction.  Upgrade to Presentation Server 4.0 for instant ROI—and continue to drive down TCO.

Enterprise-class scalability

With Presentation Server 4.0, IT can run more applications and more users on each server than previous versions, providing a great platform for server consolidation and cost reduction efforts. For large organisations, Presentation Server 4.0 can scale up to 1,000 servers, supporting as many as 100,000 users.

Broader application support

With Presentation Server 4.0 you can now deploy a much broader range of applications. Examples include troublesome applications that weren’t developed for a multi-user environment, applications that conflict with others on the same server due to memory management or DLL conflicts, applications that require dedicated IP addresses, and environments where it is necessary to run multiple versions of the same application on the same server.

Increased performance

Advancements in Presentation Server 4.0 deliver faster logon times, faster file transfers and faster browsing through files and folders.  Performance gains experienced will be even higher for remote users where latency is typically an issue. These benefits can help your organization improve user satisfaction and productivity.

Better and faster printing

Presentation Server has always provided a good printing solution with its universal print driver (UPD).  Presentation Server 4.0 comes with a NEW universal print driver and delivers printing up to four times faster using less bandwidth and memory.  Users have access to advanced printing functions like multiple trays, stapling, etc. Session printer policies allow users to more easily print to the closest printer as they roam from device to device, such as in a hospital or manufacturing plant.  Overall, printing is significantly faster and better—improving productivity and satisfaction.

Improved usability

Presentation Server 4.0 provides an improved administrator and user experience. New features include improved multi monitor support, web interface management via the Citrix console, multilanguage localization, quick launch bar for program neighborhood, and Citrix SmoothRoaming™ for smart card users.

TWAIN support

Presentation Server 4.0 provides TWAIN support where the scanning application is published on Presentation Server and the scanner is attached locally on the client device. In addition, this new version of Presentation Server also supports cameras and other imaging devices through USB.  This new feature makes Presentation Server more flexible and supports line-of-business (LOB) needs.

PDA Synchronisation

Pocket PC users want to be able to synchronise PDAs with e-mail applications running on Citrix Presentation Server.  Presentation Server 4.0 enables client-side redirection of USB to ActiveSync on the Presentation Server. This enables ActiveSync to run on multi-user operating systems. Presentation Server provides support for many Pocket PC hardware devices. There is no need for serial cradles and no configuration on the user workstation—just plug in and sync!

Improved system controls

Web Interface—Manage how users access applications through WI and PN Agent

My Knowledge—Provides troubleshooting information about alerts using knowledge-based articles from Citrix

Diagnostic Facility—Create trace logs and other system information to assist Citrix Technical Support in diagnosing problems

Hotfix Management—Manage hotfixes for your Citrix products

Increased security options

Improved application support of smart cards by eliminating the need for specific application configuration. Administrators no longer need to use a separate Citrix utility (SCConfig) to configure smart card applications

Improved PIN handling for smart cards enables users to pass their credentials correctly through to new sessions on multiple servers, helping to eliminate failed logon attempts after successfully authenticating with an initial server. This provides an easy solution for administrators who allow users with smart cards to access servers that are not smart card enabled

RSA SecurID and SafeWord authentication to web interface are now available on UNIX platforms

Increased Flexibility

Presentation Server 4.0 now offers Unified Licensing for heterogeneous environments: Windows® and UNIX® platforms.  Mix and match support for all of the following operating systems:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Sun Solaris
  • HP-UX

Online Collaboration

Citrix Conferencing Manager is now an accessory component of Citrix Presentation Server, Enterprise Edition that adds application training and collaboration:

  • On-premise solution leveraging existing Presentation Server investments
  • Training and collaboration attendees are authenticated against the corporate Active Directory, Novell eDirectory, or NT Domain directory service, while guest attendees from outside the organisation can also be allowed to participate
  • Helps to decrease time-to-value for applications newly deployed from MetaFrame Presentation Server by training and supporting users, regardless of location, from centralised IT staff.

Important Note: Features and functionality described above relate to Presentation Server Enterprise Edition, not all features are available in all editions, please refer to the product documentation.
