I’ve just been porting a Windows Mobile (.Net CF) application over to the full Net Framework. I needed to provide a quick way of doing signature capture. I was pointed by a friend (thanks Ross), to look at hosting the WPF InkCanvas control on my Windows Forms, form. I just dropped a Panel (Panel1) on my form and used the following code - System.Windows.Controls.Ink... inkbox = null; public frmpleasesign() { InitializeComponent(); inkbox = new System.Windows.Controls.Ink... inkbox.Name = ...
*Moved to: A perfect match TFS and DLR I have always been annoyed with the mechanics of the Team Foundation Server check-in policies. I understand the limitations, but having to have a specific policy installed on every developers computer before you can use it is slightly ridicules and practically unmanageable. Why is there not a way to have a single installation that allows you to select any policy you want and have it execute in the desired manor on every client, including web clients? I think ...

This is an introduction to a series of posts that I will be doing about a WPF User Control that I created with the help of my co-worker Jason Lowenthal. (See his blog at http://yodajstarwars.blogsp... These posts will be based on a presentation that Jason and I gave to our local .Net Users Group. Below is a screenshot of our finished product. If you ever tried to make irregular windows in wpf and used setting windowstyle=none,You might have used some code like this to enable minimising, maximising properties for the window: private void Minimize_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { this.WindowState = WindowState.Minimized; } private void Maximize_Click(object sender, RoutedEventArgs e) { this.WindowState = WindowState.Maximized; } But on maximizing ,the window hides the taskbar.i.e it goes fullscreen. Designers are familiar with using transparency in their work, so this post may not sound very interesting on the surface, but what I want to discuss is the use of 32-bit color within WPF. The typical way we think of color usage in digital design is RGB. RGB stands for Red, Green and Blue. 8 bits of data are designated for each color which adds up to 24 bits. In WPF we have 32 bits, so what are the extra 8 bits for? The answer is Transparency. 32-bit color can be described as ARGB, which stands for ...

If you have played with the ADO.NET Data Service, you can experience how quickly you can build RESTful Services using the Entity Model and then consume them as you would do it with WCF Services. The ADO.NET Data Services offer more flexibility in terms of granular data URIs compared to REST enabling your WCF Service. To begin with, if you are REST enabling your WCF Service using the WCF REST Starter Kit, you can enable your service to basic level of REST features. However, if you want to make this ...

A few days ago I wanted to monitor all routed events fired in my application. Because I am running an XBAP application inside a browser windows, Snoop wasn’t very helpful (it usually is). Because all routed events are basically the same, you can handle them all with one singe event handler. Using the EventManger it is possible to get all routed events and register a class handler for every one of them. The code below is a stripped down version of the code I’ve got implemented. When loaded, it gets ...

I’d like to provide you with a SilverBullet™, a small snippet of Silverlight, a class or namespace hidden in the silverlight .NET framework, to help you out in times of need. It’s not to learn, but something to keep in your pocket. Just remember it’s there and you’re safe. There are situations when you would like to start an animation as soon as your application is loaded. The EventTrigger class is what you need in that case. You may know this class from WPF, but the Silverlight version is very limited. ...

In case you missed it, a really good whitepaper by Rick Strahl and Michele Leroux Bustamante was published a few days ago on dealing with localization in WPF. At 66 pages long, I found the whitepaper really good, as it takes a hands-on, no-bull approach (in the familiar style of the authors ;) ) on the subject. There is also sample code for download containing examples and some goodies. For those interested, here's a quick summary of the paper (which is NOT supposed to replace reading it): you can ...
This is the first post in a series to demonstrate how to use the standard MSFT technologies to implement a CRUD data application in Silverlight. This post is beginners stuff - there’s nothing advanced here. Most readers with some experience of Silverlight will learn nothing from this post, but I want to start at the beginning so those of you who are relatively new to Silverlight can see how analogous building such an app in Silverlight is to say building it in ASP.NET, Win Forms or WPF. This app ...
In January and March 2009 I presented to the East Bay .NET and San Francisco Bay .NET user groups respectively on how to build business applications in Silverlight. The theme of the presentations was to show how developing line of business applications in Silverlight is extremely similar to other technologies like Win Forms, WPF or ASP.NET. I demoed how to build a simple CRUD application in Silverlight hitting a SQL Server database over WCF. The building of the application during the presentation ...

Last year I developed a demo CRM sales application in Silverlight with Ward Bell - VP Product Management at IdeaBlade - so that we could show it off by the time of PDC 2008. We wanted to show the capability of Silverlight (being developed on 2.0 beta - converted to 2.0 RTM by the start of PDC) to build advanced context sensitive business apps in Silverlight, given that most Silverlight demos being touted around were purely rich media or graphics related. We were successful in developing the prototype ...
I recently set out to build a WPF application using the Composite Client Application Guidance (lovingly known as “Prism”) code base. Additionally, I wanted to make use of the Blacklight controls – specifically, the DragDockPanelHost and DragDockPanel controls – in the application. I soon discovered that these two code bases didn’t work together “right out of the box”. I found a problem, and a solution, and this post describes both the issue and its resolution. The architecture promoted by Prism is ...
