Microsoft's New SyncToy Part 2

Hey,

I have these 2 updates to my first post.

  • The ability to synchronize with files on a network share
  • The ability to overwride file structure
  • The ability to change the Left or Right folder.  Once set, you can't change it (delete and create new).
  • Integration with Windows Explorer

For point 1: there's a workaround.  You map a drive to the network share and use the map.

For point 2: if I don't have access to change the file structure in the source and want to override it, I can't.  The only workaround is to have a FolderPair for each subfolder (not too nice when you have 100 subfolders).

Any new sub folder would either be automatically synchronized or prompted by the user.... The user would then either choose to ignore, confirm or re-route to an existing folder.

For point 3: there must be a .config file or something that we could generate, but it seems a bit clunky.

For point 4: Think of “Right click” a folder -> SyncToy -> New Synch.  or, if there was the idea of hierarchical synch: Right Click -> SyncToy -> Master -> Sub Folder 1 -> Sub Folder 1A... then the Rigth Clicked folder would be synchronized under Sub Folder 1A.

Point 3 and 4 would then be combined to form a “virtual” hierarchy and a “physical” hierarchy.

- Virtual:  I want to organize my SyncToy like this:

  • Master
    • Pictures
      • Work
      • Personal
    • Settings
    • Music
    • Applications
      • Personal Templates
      • ...

On the other hand, the physical files would spread accross multiple folders, machines and environments.
