Windows 8 will be unleashed on the general public tomorrow and I thought it would be a good time to review some of the numbers I have been tracking over the last month. Downloads of Windows 8 Apps have been steadily increasing over the last month. So it looks like Microsoft will be allowing publishers to list their desktop apps in the Windows 8 Store. As per the developer agreement: b. Desktop App Submission. Or is it? Since Microsoft announced the Windows Store, the official word has been that desktop apps could not be distributed in the store. But this morning I noticed this: That’s odd, but after clicking on one of these, I see that all it does is link to the website where you download Visual Studio So really, it’s not a desktop app in the store. It’s more of an ad for a desktop app. Interestingly enough, despite the menu being ALL CAPS, Visual Studio 2012 is getting a nearly solid 5/5 stars ......

With still a month left until Windows 8 is made commercially available, I was surprised to hear yesterday that there are already 16 million devices running Windows 8 (via @TommyLee). I was also surprised to see that in Canada, there are already over 2000 apps available in the Windows Store. This might not sound like much, but it is double the number of apps available less than a month ago. These look like good signs for the Windows 8 ecosystem. I am hoping to see the number of apps continue to grow ......

I was recently working on a Windows 8 app, and the application was crashing occasionally. When resuming the application, the app would crash and close immediately without providing any feedback or information on what went wrong. The crash was very difficult to reproduce, and I could never get the crash to occur when I was debugging through Visual Studio. My app was crashing, and I had no idea what was going wrong! HELP!!!
