Disable Right-Click = Stupid. (and how to defeat it.)

Why do webmasters disable the context menu?

Surfing around today I found www.webtechgeek.com and decided to subscribe to the RSS feed there.  Considering I was using IE at the time, I was going to right click the RSS feed, copy the location, and paste it into my RSS reader.

Boom, warning box:

You do not have permission to right-click.

Dumb.  Why is it so important that one not right-click on the page?  What is so valuable?  Plus, it is so easily defeated:

  1. Right Click on the page and continue to hold the button down
  2. Hit Enter to close the dialog box
  3. Let off the right mouse button
  4. Hit Enter to close the dialog box again
  5. Poof... the context menu appears.

Anyway, he lost a reader to his feed for being so silly...

Gravatar I understand the point. However, as a photographer things change. When I developed my web site and posted my Clients photos my average sale per customer dropped. And when I right click disable my site my sales returned back to normal. Nothing is fool proof I just keep honest people honest. 11/5/2005 1:29 AM | Paul

Gravatar It's not really clear what effect Paul is describing. If he means that he sells images on the web, then duh, don't provide a high-res image on your index page. Or watermark your preview images.

There's no good excuse for breaking people's browser functionality. The context menu isn't just for "view source" and "save as." Look, I use my context menu for opening in new window and in new tab all the time. Any site that disables that is on my sh*t list. Including, by the way, Google Book Search.

As far as "keeping honest people honest," there's no such thing. You're just keeping lazy dishonest people from being dishonest, doing nothing to the mildly determined dishonest folk at all, and keeping honest people ANNOYED. 11/24/2005 3:57 AM | Joe

Gravatar thanks everybody i was looking for a technique like this forever
theres a different technique where you can add a site (site that enables nonrightclick) as a link. when you click the link, it doesn't warp you to site but it disables the nonrightclick. its handy i have it on a dif comp but i forgot where to add the site from. 2/10/2006 1:06 AM | dude thats desperate

Gravatar I hate RIGHTCLICK warnings. I wrote them a complaint, and tell them what gives you the right to do it? I told them I hated rightclick warnings that said "This page is copyrighted", "Sorry...Function Disabled", or "You don't have permission to copy this!". I told them to ELIMINATE that so-called rightclick warning. I'm sorry I had to said this, down with rightclick warnings, everybody have their own opinions, and I don't want to hurt peoples feelings.
