So Google is well known for providing all sorts of unconventional perks ranging from car washes, haircuts, food, etc..
I recently came across the NY Times article highlighting the Shuttle Services that Google offers its employees to and from Googleplex. They have several pick-up locations throughout the Bay area.
"And Google can get a couple of extra hours of work out of employees who would otherwise be behind the wheel of a car."
Besides this added advantage of implementing such a system, employee morale is greatly enhanced. And in one case, both of these benefits are seen. The morning stories of an employee's horrific commute to work will be eliminated =).
In light of Google's implementation, It looks like Intel and Microsoft still get the nod for being most commuter friendly.
"For all their popularity, the shuttles have yet to earn Google the title of most commuter-friendly employer. The top spot in the Environmental Protection Agency’s Best Workplaces for Commuters went to Intel, which allows telecommuting, offers transit subsidies to employees and helps pay for shuttles that bring workers from transit stops, among other benefits. Google tied Oracle for third; Microsoft came in second."
On a similar note, I mentioned the SoundPRT in a previous blog post last year. It's aimed more directly at solving problems in one specific area as opposed to covering a wider radius (38 mile for the Google shuttle).
