West Palm Beach .Net User Group Meeting - 10/26/2010 – All About Azure - Scott Klein, Microsoft MVP

Our West Palm Beach .Net User Group will be honored to have Scott Klein, Microsoft MVP and Author of Pro. SQL Azure (APRESS) as our October speaker. Scott will be talking and answering all our questions about Azure.

Time has never been better for our Fladotnet West Palm Beach .Net User Group. We are fortunate to have a free meeting location offered to us by CompTec and to enjoy the backing and sponsorship of many top notch companies. This support is enabling us to uphold our founders’ vision: Create a fun, free-for-all, learning experience for our local .Net community and do our best for every attendee to go home having learned something new and preferably with a free swag item courtesy of our sponsors.

We have recently received swag donations from Telerik consisting of several free Telerik Ultimate Collection licenses. A thank you is in order for Emily Parker, Community Program Manager at Telerik who is very quick to support us whenever we run low on swag.

Many thanks for Infragistics which just sent us several free licenses of their valuable software and to Sara Faatz who is always willing to support our free-for-all .Net User Groups. I was privileged to have a brief meeting with Jason Beres, Director of Product Management at Infragistics, a couple of weeks ago where he expressed his and Infragistics’ continued commitment to support community user groups which we greatly appreciate.

We have just received a complimentary package from DevProConnections magazine with their latest October 2010 issue which will distribute at our October group meeting.

We had received a package from TechSmith, maker of the world renowned Camtasia Studio, containing various swag items along with free trial editions of their latest products. This package kept us afloat with swag until support from other sources arrived and we would like to express our appreciation for their support.

We would also like to thank Koen Zwikstra, Microsoft MVP, for donating several licenses of his valuable SilverlightSpy software to our group. His gift has been constantly among the first swag items selected by our winners from our swag pool. We look forward to Koen’s continued support and backing of our group.

We would also like to acknowledge the support of many reputable book publishers who have been constantly supplying us with the latest editions of their books. We look forward to their continued support.

A very special "Thank You" goes to our local community servant and Microsoft Developer Evangelist Joe Healy (devfish). Joe drove hundreds of miles to speak at and promote our group and is always here for us should we need his support.

We would also like to thank our group attendees and speakers. Our user group wouldn't exist without our members and our volunteer speakers who donate their time and effort to come and share with us.

Our meetings wouldn’t be as fun and complete without the free Pizza/Soda brought to us by Sherlock Technology, Sisco Corp. and Adroit Technologies. Sherlock Technology was the first to support us after funding from other prior kind supporter ran out and we would like to thank them for being a “First Mover” :)

Our group is blessed with so much support that I probably missed to give due credit to many people/organizations. To them, I say “Thank you very much” and I apologize for the old rusty hard drive installed in my head.

We look forward to meeting you all at our October meeting taking place October 26th, 2010 at CompTec. To register please visit http://www.fladotnet.com/Reg.aspx?EventID=490

All in a Day’s Work: SQL Schema Save Failure: The Save Not Permitted Dialog Box

With most of our systems pre-configured with SQL server, it was only today that I ran into this issue with my fresh installation instance of SQL Server 2008 R2.

I had just created a new SandBox DB to experiment with some aspects of Entity Framework 4.0, but as I was saving foreign key changes to tables I had already created I got the following error:

Figure 1 - Unable to save table schema changes error

With some research, I found my answer in SQL Books Online: Any Schema changes made to a table would require disabling the default option of “Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created”. To resolve this, from SQL Management Studio, go to: Tools->Options->Designers->Table and Database Designers. We would then need to uncheck the “Prevent saving changes that require the table to be re-created” check box as shown below and Voila!

Figure 2- Uncheck The "Prevent saving changes that require table re-creation" check box

Southwest FL .Net Code Camp - September 25th, 2010

Sam Abraham (Me) had the great pleasure of attending and participating at the SW FL .Net Code Camp which took place on September 25, 2010 at Florida Gulf Coast University, Estero, FL.

I spoke at two sessions: “ASP.Net MVC” and “SSIS for C# Developers”. I was pleasantly surprised with the high turnout at the MVC session despite the fact that it was scheduled early on that Saturday (8:45 AM). This highlights the growing interest in ASP.Net MVC and its related suite of tools such as Razor, Web Pages Helpers and WebMatrix, to name a few.

John Dunagan and his volunteer code camp committee did a wonderful job ensuring all aspects and logistics of the event went as planned and that arising issues were immediately tended to.

One notable all-day-long track I attended was for Windows Phone 7 featuring the highly regarded speakers Joe Healy, Henry Lee, Diane Leeper, Jonas Stawski, Kevin Wolf and Nikita Polyakov.

Code camp was yet another good example of what it means to be part of a “Technical Community”. Everyone’s friendliness, openness to share their knowledge and sincere care about other community members was phenomenal.

In trying to express what I saw, I couldn’t find better words than how John Dunagan put it in a conversation we had after code camp: “We are all one family”, he said.

Look forward to visiting John and the SW FL .Net User Group in the near future.

All the best,

Sam Abraham to Speak at the South West .Net Code Camp on September 25th, 2010

Sam Abraham (Me) will be speaking at The South West Florida .Net Code Camp taking place on Saturday, September 25th, 2010. I will be sharing two topics: “SSIS for C# Developers” and “Introduction to ASP.Net MVC”. With so many great speakers covering a wide variety of today’s hottest technologies, the event is bound to be a great learning experience for all.

Looking forward to attending as many talks as my brain can take. :)

See you all there!

--Sam Abraham

Here are the abstract for my scheduled talks:

SSIS for Developers:

SSIS enables us to quickly create deployable packages to move/manipulate data. Things do however get a bit challenging when source and destination tables are not known at package design time or when a requirement exists to have an already-deployed package support schema changes in source tables. One solution to this problem is to leverage our ability to create and execute an SSIS package dynamically in code. In this session we will take a look at a complete project for a C# Runtime SSIS Package Designer, taking as input a set of table names and dynamically generating both destination Access tables then creating, validating, saving and executing an SSIS Package at runtime with logging enabled to demonstrate the various package steps.

An Introduction to ASP.Net MVC

In this session, we will introduce ASP.Net MVC and compare it to traditional Web Forms. We will also share a scenario where an organization can incrementally/partially adopt MVC while keeping its existing ASP.Net Web Forms in the same project.

About the Speaker

Sam Abraham is a Microsoft Certified Professional (MCP) and Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS ASP.Net 3.5/4.0). He currently lives in South Florida where he leads the West Palm Beach .Net User Group (www.fladotnet.com) and serves as Director of Electronic Communications at the South Florida Chapter of The Project Management Institute (www.southfloridapmi.org). Sam finds his passion in leveraging latest and greatest .Net Technologies along with proven Project Management practices and methodologies to produce high quality, cost-competitive software.
I will be speaking at SQL Saturday #40, an all-day FREE SQL event taking place at Devry University on July 31st, 2010.

We will be making use of the INFORMATION_SCHEMA.COLUMNS to retrieve column properties for desired SQL Server tables then leveraging the ADOX Library to dynamically create corresponding Access database tables using C#. We will then continue to demonstrate how to Programmatically generate an SSIS package to copy selected rows from the SQL Server tables to their corresponding, dynamically-created, Access Tables. I hope for this talk to be a good forum for discussion where each of us learns something new.

To register and join the 400+ already-registered attendees, please visit www.sqlsaturday.com/40/eventhome.aspx

Looking forward to meeting you all there.
