The Misfortune of Mobiles!

Well I found out today that it's not just my little mobi that is dead, Steve Clayton - who jinxed my baby mobi - has managed to break his oh so fantastic ;) Smartphone!  It looks like he jinxed himself at the same time.

It must be that time of the year... I wonder how he managed to break his mobile... I hope he didn't drop his in a puddle too...

London To Brighton... Fun and Games!
Well with the Van all booked and our entire team organised you would expect things to operate with military precision on the day. It started well 5 out of 6 team members turned up on time. One over slept! (Bad man Richard!) The van got loaded up with all the bikes in the morning (this is the van that we couldn't unlock on friday so had to leave unlocked so that we could guaruntee getting into it! The RAC's advice once we had it unlocked - Don't lock it!!!) Bikes loaded and all members present and ......

San Diego & The Girly Geeks
OK so I have a question... where are the San Diego Girly Geeks? Not heard from them yet and I am off over there towards the end of next week! I don't believe that they don't exist... I want to have a girly geek dinner party with them... see how they actually work over there. It must be a bit different to over here and would love to get a few discussions going. If you are a girly geek in San Diego, or know one then do let me know and I will try to sort out a San Diego girl geek dinner... same rules ......

Me and my Mobi!
Well after putting that post up on smartphone mobiles, I obviously jinx'd myself... either that or Steve Clayton did... To cut a long story very short, my poor little mobi that I love so much ended up in a puddle of water! I don't think it has survived at all... it turns on but the keys don't work. Poor little mobi! So now I am back with my old XDAII. So far no one has managed to get me onto Smartphone and with being on the XDA I'm back off of Symbian at least for a while... I wonder what will be ......

Last day before London to Brighton!
OK it is now the day before London to Brighton, I have to change an inner tube, configure the gears on my bike a little and then get to Brighton tomorrow morning... not too much left to do now other than the ride itself. I am actually looking forward to it. All those people should create a fantastic atmosphere! If you still haven't sponsored me and would like to then please donate online at www.bhf.org.uk/sponsor/sara... Any sponsorship will be greatly appreciated. Many thanks to all those people ......

A little known fact about me and Smartphones
Well after a few conversations with people at the MEDC I suddenly realised that although I don't own a MS Smartphone and never have, I probably never will go out and buy one... It is not as though they don't look smart and stylish but I just can't get to grips with their interface. For me it is just not usable. I don't like the input methods, I hate browsing the web on them, and configuring them for vpn access to collect e-mail... need I say more... Anyway... I am now awaiting the day that a Smartphone ......

What makes a poor presentation - things NOT to do!
You need to have enthusiasm! Enjoy what you are talking about. Don't mumble. Try to avoid talking mono-tone and droning. (sometimes it just takes practice!) Slides should be a combination of visual text, voice and images as well as diagrams. Real world examples and examples that the audience can relate to are a good idea. Practice your presentation if you are nervous in front of people. Interact with your audience, presentations don't have to be a one way information channel. Questions are best left ......

XP Embedded... the future (next few years)
I have been told that there will not be a Vista Embedded but there will be feature pack add-ons to XP embedded as it stands currently to provide support for the new features. This makes a lot more sense to me than completely re-writing/ issuing the embedded system as it means that backward compatibility and remote updates of such enhancements can be pushed out to all devices, which could be very useful under certain circumstances. Some things to consider when deciding between the systems is whether ......

Hands On Lab: Multi-threaded applications with the .Net CF
I was full of hope with this hands on lab that it would give some hints, tips and best practice on how to do good multi threading applications and unfortunately it was just the absolute basics of creating a mobile application and doing thread joins and aborts. Nothing much about handling race conditions best and nothing much about best practice at all. I am hoping that other hands on labs will be much better. I have earmarked a couple to go to so I will keep my fingers crossed. The sessions themselves ......

MEDC Europe: Intro into CE6
Mike Hall chaired this session on Windows CE 6 and what it was really all about. I am just going to do bullet points on this one as I would be here all day otherwise and most of the info is around on the net anyway! CE6 is a: real-time system (MS do not guaruntee end to end safety cases) Increased footprint size Micro second Real time New XFat file system -> Compatible with standard Windows OS Removed the 32/32 process limit and increased it to 32k/32k (via the new kernel) New Virtual machine ......

MEDC Europe: Keynote - Todd Warren Innovation Brings Opportunity
Well today is day one of the Mobile and Embedded Developer Conference here in Nice and I thought I would do my best to give a few brief overviews of what goes on at the event and maybe even podcast a few of the sessions, assuming MS allow me to host the content. :) The first session of the day was with Todd Warren, Corporate VP of Mobile and Embedded Development for Microsoft Corporation. His talk was all about the big picture of mobility, embedded devices and where Microsoft are planning on taking ......

@media Social For those who aren't able to attend the @media 2006 conference, or for those who are attending and want to continue the experience, the @media Social is an opportunity to meet, eat, drink, and chat away the day with likeminded web enthusiasts. Wifi CF card with CE4.2 Drivers
I had a fun task of finding an alternative solution to an Aeronet 350 PCMCIA card that is still available and is still being manufactured that would run on a Windows CE 4.2 operating system. It sounds like such a simple task... but no... it has taken me about 6 months to find any sort of wifi solution that would do this. However we did have a bit of a power constraint as well, so that may have hindered things a bit too! Anyway, what I have managed to find is a PCMCIA to CF converter and a CF Wifi ......

Windows Service resources and info
Below are some useful resources that I fell across as I did my first windows service. I thought putting them all together on one page would be a good idea. I hope you find it useful There is a really useful article on the Microsoft website about how to create a Windows Service and how to use a compiled setup project to install the service. A link to this article is here (http://support.microsoft.c... One thing I did find out even after I followed these instructions is that if you create ......

Go Karting - Eastleigh
Last night I took part in my second team go-karting competition over at the track at Eastleigh. It was great fun, and the track there was much longer, faster and wider than the one over in Andover. I personally preferred it… less chance to crash into barriers and a bit more forgiving on under steer which I do sometimes o if I am not concentrating. There were 11 teams this time and we were team number 5. We were supposed to have 5 people in our team but one of our drivers didn't turn up. So ......

Thinking about San Diego Girl Geek Dinner?
Well with going over to San Diego some time around 20th June to 20th August for work I am wondering if there are any other tech females over there up for getting together at some point during that time for a San Diego Girl Geek Dinner. I don't know how hard it is to book a restaurant area etc over there or even which ones are good restaurants… so am up for ideas & suggestions. Also if anyone over there would like to talk on a subject… see if we can get it going in a similar format ......
