Female Role Models

I was talking with Sam Sethi yesterday about who the strong female role models are in the world and how many of them have a strong online presence. We came to the distinct conclusion between us that there isn't a single female that you can categorically say is the technical role model for men or women to look up to.

I can think of a few key women that could have the potential to do this but I'm not sure that they realise that they have the potential to influence and encourage others to venture into the unknown and build on what they know already. My list of top females in IT in no particular order are as follows:

Eileen Brown - Microsoft
Gillian Arnold - IBM
Suw Charman - Independent Consultant
Adriana Cronin-Lukas - The Big Blog Company
Rachel Jones - Instrata
Jen Dixon - Independent Consultant
Sue Loh - Microsoft
Maryam Scoble - Independent Consultant
Rachel Clarke - The Big Blog Company
Miss Rogue! - Riya.com
Molly E. Holzschlag - An author, instructor, and Web designer

Each of the above women mentionned are smart, intelligent, fantastic at their jobs and show a lot of promise for the future. They have all achieved great things on both a business and a personal level. I also know for a fact that they don't see themselves as role models. If you see them as your role model tell them! Let these women know the impact that they can have on people around the world. These are my A list bloggers and women in technology!

Of course, the typical role models still count but I was thinking new age, up and coming... leading edge role models... the ones that will drive the next generation businesses! :)

Grace Hopper, Ada Lovelace and related women are fantastic role models for the up and coming role models just starting to get a hold on these things, and I believe that some of the people on this list look to them for inspiration from time to time! :)

Seriously, it's uncomfortable for me to think of myself as anyone's role model. I know my failings as a human and feel that my successes, while perhaps worthy of notice or respect, are only a small part of who I am. Not all of me is worthy of role model-hood. I think if I thought of myself that way, it would impede my ability to keep learning.

I'm very honored but maybe this is why people don't view themselves as role models, they see the entirety of their personalities complete with many flaws rather than only their strengths?

The reasons you give for not thinking of yourself as people's role models are exactly why people do think of you as one.

Role models are people who are morally good, encourage others and inspire others. You do that. You know where your weaknesses are but yet work around them and work to your strengths.

Remember everyone has personality flaws, it's how people deal with them which makes them either exceptional people or people that you don't want to associate with.

Think of sports role models for example... some of them are fantastic examples for the younger generations to look up to, however you wouldn't want young people to take the examples that some of the tv star/ film star set with their multiple marriages, drug abuse and alcoholism surely! So you see, I personally thing technology role models should have a place in society and I think in the future they will have a much bigger role to play in shaping the future of young people.

Consider it an honour and just keep doing what your doing. :)

I work on an initiative called CC4G (computer clubs for girls- www.cc4g.net) which goes out to schools across the UK, with the aim of increasing the appeal of IT to girls between the ages of ten and 14. We are always looking for sucessful emails in the field to provide short role model interviews for the site. Would any of you/ do any of you know anyone who would be, willing to participate? Please let me know if you would like more details.
