10 Reasons NOT to date a Geek (unless they don't follow this pattern!)

Well I've seen so many 10 reasons to date a geek that I thought I would go with the opposite, having dated a few in the past! Share the knowledge so to speak! Bear in mind that I am also a geek so there will be clashes there!

OK so here goes....

1. They prefer to talk to you via the computer than directly to you.
2. If it were a choice between computer or female they will choose the computer. (Don't ask me why they just seem to! - Something to do with online gaming I believe!)
3. They actually think it is romantic to fix your pc or write your webpage? What is that all about... It's not as though it is hard to do... and they like doing it anyway coz they can show it off to all their mates!
4. A screen lit dinner doesn't quite work as well as a candle lit one!
5. Computers, beer, football, gaming... aren't exactly what a girl wants to hear about 24/7.
6. 24/7 slating of MS products isn't actually productive and can get very annoying.... almost as annoying as no 7!
7. 24/7 praise of anything Open Source without justification...
8. You can't get past a computer or gadget shop without going inside it! (It's fine if you are also into the tech gadgets like I am, but for anyone else I can see how seriously annoying it can be!)
9. If you actually manage to get near the computer when he is around he will be pestering you every 5 minutes trying to show you how you could have done everything better a different way (on a linux platform with open source code!)
10. Oh remember this is all IF you can manage to drag him away from his computer for 5 minutes for him to ask you out ;)

Guys don't take this too personally, just thought I would add an alternative view to Maryam Scoble's blog on 10 reasons to date a geek. Personally I'm not adverse to dating geeks, I think you have to have a bit of an understanding where they get this obsession with all things geeky. But watch out! They may just manage to convert you!

Well, let's see... I'm a geek. I fit into most of these categories and you know what? Those computers we're so attached to never do things to us like write lists of reasons why we're a bad subculture, group, etc. I read her list a few days ago, and I find you both stereotypical and just a wee bit shallow.

In your defense, your top 10 list was better formatted than Maryam's.

I agree wih Slackmaster, in that you and Maryam are being very stereotypical and shallow with these lists.

Although, you're defending MS, so my opinion might just be slightly biased!

I think that list was meant to be more of the satire reading than of the serious reading. Laugh. Please. It's good for you.

And as for gaming.. There's a reason they call it "World of Warcrack"... need to goto rehab to get off, it seems. Gaming is all about the competition though.. many geeks are all about that.

Hmmm. If you had written a list called '10 reasons not to date Jews/blacks', and made some serious generalisations about Jewish/black men, then this would have caused a lot of offence. (Yeah, just try and justify THAT as satire, or tell Jews/black people not to take it so seriously.)

Why is it OK to write articles like this about geeks then?

because 'geekism' is a behavioural pattern, wheres judaism is a religion and black is a skin colour. maybe you have a geeky behavioural pattern because you don't have a sense of humour, and therfore shut yourself inside with your little computer screen which will never shun you will it? ...precious

Todays beeing a Geek is like to Able to Read. It's just a style like the color of your hair / car. It may not determine where you will go or what you will do.

Have you considered that Geeks form a collective subculture and some may be offended by harsh overgeneralizations? Geeks like me make it a lifestyle and take it very seriously.

Well... I'm a geek and I don't go getting all upset over generalisations about being a girlie geek... To be honest i find it amusing some of the things that people come up with.

Geek, lifestyle... now there's a thought... so now we have geek subcultures... and geek lifestyles... Would you like to expand on this ;)

Nice list, Funny!

One thing is missing, by my geek point of view: the intellectual ego that urge them to be always right about things.
Another consecuence about that is the fear to be shallow... I think that some replies said you are shallow because in the list you make us look like that.
You are right about that.

Have a nice day

Come on you guys, this is just a joke. Everheard of the '10 reasons why a beer is better than a girlfriend'? I don't get offended by that and you guys shouldn't get offended by this. If anything, it sounds like it was written tongue in cheek by someone who really likes geeks. I love my geeky husband and I am also a geek AND I find this funny! So don't be so defensive. People who genuinely don't like geeks probably wouldn't even get this anyway (something to do with the aftermentioned inability to read perhaps). Or maybe not even being able to find it. X

I'll give you all a hint about how serious or rather un-serious this post was... I had a male geek sat next to me when writing it and we were both laughing about it when we wrote it...

We compared notes on what were typical geek tendancies and just wrote down what we thought. No real harm or upset is meant by it... we are both fully fledge geeks and I am very surprised that people have been taking it seriously. Not even my little bro took it seriously... and yes that really was my little brother's response to the blog post... in case you were wondering. ;)

There's no need to justify praise for open source efforts, the fact that they're open source should be cause for praise alone! It's people working together to write software without monetary compensation, GNU/GPL devs should be knighted!

I'd have to disagree with point 5 - what geeks do you know that play football?? Football involves getting out and meeting other people - actually interacting IRT IRL!

Also the average geek I doubt would want to be associated with your typical football bloke (i.e. those who think Fosters is 'beer').

You forgot to add that they are hyper-sensitive! Look at all the criticism you received. If this were a "blond" joke list than they wouldn't have said anything.

C'mon everyone this is a joke and it's funny!

Oh, I also don't know any geeks that like football, or beer for that matter.

And it was really funny when that guy defended his computer. LOL Don't worry dude, everyone likes computers, this is a joke.

yeah, she said "when I look at you I think only geeky thoughts", that was cold... I must not fit into this mold very well, because I've been having a lot of trouble with 5 - 9 just among my friends. So much so, that I've outlawed any mindless praising or mocking of operating systems or software in the office I'm sharing. As for the other rules, I'd say I'm guilty of 1 and 10.

Now if you're the sort to tell a guy that finding the girl for them is as easy as "just being yourself", then you can go jump. Most ridiculous advice I've ever been given, especially in light of the previously mentioned rules.

Pssh some geek. If you were a geek, you would use proper English. You are so stereotypical. Just because one guy is like that doesn't mean all of them have to. Are you just like poser geek or something.. or did you just decide to date a geek for the heck of it? Besides you are listing reasons why not to date a geek and you claim to be one.. So, you don't want anyone to date you.. and is that how you act? If so, don't rant on it terd.

I think that all of us geeks out there would say that it is not a matter of if it is funny or not. We are simply pointing out the ignorance of the person who creating the list. If they were trying to be funny they could have done a much better job.

I take it that you must have had a bad relationship with a geek. So what if you are being sterotypical, it's all true and annoying. I totally agree with you and back you on this, but you forgot that sometimes they can also be a self downer, aka extremely annoying. Nice work.
