Are Orange Afraid of VoIP?

I found the following very interesting article in the latest Mobile Communications International magazine.

I have to say it sounds to me as though Orange aren't all geared up to dealing with VoIP as a service... I mean, if they don't have a VoIP offering and other companies are offering it where does that leave them other than with a declining market.... a worrying day for Orange.

They should be scared especially considering the deal between Skype and eBay this week. VOIP is big business. Heck,VOIP is so serious that BT are planning a pure TCP/IP-based network for both voice and data services to replace the existing copper coax net.

I use the predecssor to this phone, the SPV M2000. Which has much the same connectivity but lacks 3G. The wi-fi was not disabled - they'd be mad to do that, it's a major feature.

I have used Skype on the phone, but the times when I'm in range of a wireless access point which is cheaper than the phone charges and don't have a landline available are pretty few and far between.

I have noticed though that t-mobile are geared up with wireless access points at plenty of airports etc where orange are not.

However, I expect this to change. The French parent are getting into LLU across Europe - including UK in a big way, so they're clearly looking at internet access from many angles. It'll be the phone copanies who offer the wi-fi access, they then won't care whether you skype or use the regular mobile network as long as they get their slice.
