Wouldn't it be nice if....

I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice if your job was your hobby. It would be great to just spend my time doing things that I just really enjoy doing all the time. Unfortunately in the world of work this just doesn't tend to happen.

I bet you are wondering why I came up with this. Well I have been sat in the office this morning and was thinking, it's a lovely sunny day and I wish I could just go out for an hour and come back later without everyone asking where i went and what I was doing. Get some fresh air and then go back to my work. Unfortunately things like this aren't looked kindly upon. Personally I know i would be more productive and would be more alert as a result.

If I had my own company I think I would try to employ people who find their work as more of a hobby than work and to have a very informal work environment where results are expected but they can do the hours they want whenever they want. At university as a student I tended to find that the majority of good students with high grades worked in this way and i often wonder why businesses don't adopt it. I am guessing there are too many regulations around working times and being in the office on your own (health and safety risks). It is such a shame really.

It's a shame more companies don't realise these things. The act of taking a little time off during the day is incredibly beneficial: if you are stuck on a problem sometimes the change of environment helps (something to do with left/right brain action maybe?).

Unless there is a need for you to be interrupted and available to other people throughout the day, I think you should be able to work when you want. When I am working I generally try and keep a mental time bank - so I can kind of justify to myself I have worked a 40 hr week at least!

I am not sure about the UK, but on this side of the pond, most companies work that way. You have a floor time (when meetings are held and people are expected to be in office like say from 10am - 3pm) I had a friend who interned at M$ and said that some of the architects would stroll in at 1 pm and be there till 2 am if they wanted to. I have a funny feeling that most companies are going to move to this model in the near future. Most 20 year olds are doing it now and by the time they move into management and can implement policies it will take 15 - 20 years.

The problem with this type of model is that there are always people who push it too far. They take advantage of the situation and slack off way too much. In that case management tends to revoke the privilege wholesale rather than just reigning in the few people who are going too far. And it's often in the name of "cost savings and efficiency".

Most managers don't care about employee morale. They want to see buts in the chairs. That's just my sweeping generalization (an experience) speaking. Your mileage may vary.

Yep, one of the advantages of working for yourself.
Of course, with my lifestyle its more cramming the work into every little nook and cranny, what with the kids, housework and life in general.
Its more of a chain - 'oh, I have a free half hour, I should really do some work rather than take that me-time I was dreaming about' - than a freedom. Although given that my work is my hobby, its not that bad a chain, but the client work often isn't as fun as my personal projects, they just pay better.

I can definately see both sides to the working for yourself thing. I think you have to get a good balance so that you have time to relax and enjoy yourself.

Then again there is always that feeling that when you're not working you should be. I guess you have to either accept it or become a workaholic. ;)
