Software Renovators or Innovators?
Something that Rory Lowe said in one of his talks was that software developers are renovators and not innovators. This does make you start to think, what was he classing as an innovator. Yes quite often developers are asked to re-invent the wheel, but where does "renovation" stop and innovation start? I have a different idea on this one. Innovators are people who see an opportunity, or a market and have the skills and ambition to create a product or service to fulfil that market. I would love to ......

Women only Geek dinner Update
Well there has been a mixed response to the women only geek dinner at the moment and not all that much of a response from many of the girls, even with a high number of people finding my site. So far it looks like only 3 people other than myself definately want this to go ahead... we could start with just 3, but it does seem a bit of a shame not to get more people involved... Whatever happened to our Microsoft women geeks? Not heard from any of them... Not even Sue Loh. :( And are there any BBC Backstage ......

Wow! Lots of people out there!
OK maybe I shouldn't be suprised, but i am. I didn't realise there were that many people out there interested in reading my blog. It looks like I should be writing more of what is in my head. People seem to like it. (Slightly worrying with my warped little mind!) I gave a list of the blogs that I was planning on writing... well I have done most of those and I got bored of trying to write about technology past present and future... It just felt like I was writing the same kind of stuff as the rest ......

What I'm up to at the moment
So what am I up to at the moment…. Well, to be honest nothing all that interesting. WORK Unfortunately my job does involve this thing that a lot of developers ignore, or forget to do it. Documentation… yes you heard it… writing up how code works, doing the fiddly diagrams and all that stuff. And this is just for a demo piece of software. Part of the joy of working for an industry that has to comply with medical standards. Sometimes you just wish that these things would just write ......

Should the girls have a female only geek dinner?
Now here's a question... Should we have a women only geek dinner? The reason I ask this is because I just wonder how many women in technology really socialise in the technology industry to get contacts? Obviously the men do, we have seen that with the other geek dinners. I have to say I felt like a real minority at the last geek dinner that I attended, wouldn't it be nice to just get all the girls together. Have a nice girlie dinner and chat about technology and stuff. It would be even better if ......

SPOT devices Where have they gone?
There was a lot of talk about SPOT devices last year from Mr Gates and his team… you remember… Smart Portable Object Technologies… So far I haven't seen any of these things and it just makes me wonder whether it is another idea that they are just going to shelve and leave forever and a day. I had hoped that they would lead to some interesting little portable projects and things. Think about SPOT and Zigbee when the two things both come out… Now that is an area that I would ......

How technological innovations are quashed by big businesses
Firstly I am going to define what I class as a technological innovation. To me a technological innovation is something that is clever, unique, is fit for it’s intended purpose and has a market. Technological innovations can be created both within a company or outside of a company, or even within a start up business or university. When these innovations come about and are developed to a point where they can be marketed and sold a lot of the innovations don't get off of the ground. However most ......

Are technologists under represented when technological related acts are passed through parliament?
A recent article that I read somewhere recently was discussing technologists and how they are not represented very well in parliament. It made me thing a bit about the subject area and I have to say that I do wonder whether the technologists are overlooked a little when some acts are passed through the house of commons. The reason that this particular subject came up was due to the identity cards and software patent acts that the current government have been trying to pass as legislation. Fortunately ......

Some quick questions for my readers
Just so that I get a bit of an idea of the sort of people that read my site and what they are interested in please could you respond to this with your answers: What interested you in my blog? What would you like to see more of? What do you use the information on this blog for? What could I do to improve the content of the blog? What makes you comment on blogs? Where did you hear about my blog? Any other comments ......

A quiet few days
I have a feeling that the next few days will be quite quiet on my site. Sorry to those who were hoping for technical stuff at the moment. Unfortunately with having a nice quiet weekend I won't be about. Also I'm off to Rotterdam for work on Monday and Tuesday so I may not be online over then next few days. In the mean time just to give people a few things to think about I have a list of areas that I intend to write about when I get back... They are as follows: Are technologists under represented ......

Let the people become your intelligence
It's really odd the way humans behave and react. Sometimes they suprise me and sometimes they just annoy and frustrate me. Today has been one of those rather mixed days, frustration of terrorists getting away with terrorism again, annoyed because we decreased our security levels! (what was that all about? Especially with G8 on as well!) I have seen so many different reactions to todays events in London and to be honest some of them disgust me. Some people seem to have a morbid curiosity in what happened. ......

London hit by terrorists
News reports have stated that there have been 3 blasts on the London Underground and one confirmed bus explosion. The perpetrators of this act are not yet know. Initial reports suggested that the underground blasts were caused by a large power surge, however this has now been revoced after reports from witnesses saying otherwise. All this coming the day after London wins 2012 and on the second day of the G8 summit. Is this a coincidence? Personally I doubt it, however I would love to be proved wrong. ......

Who is the most famous female techie blogger?
Who is the most famous female programmer, or female in IT? Who is the most famous female techie blogger? I have been thinking, who really out of all the techie females in the world is the most famous of us all? I know for one that it isn’t me. (Although sometimes I do wish it could be.) What is it that makes bloggers famous? How do the likes of Robert Scoble and Co. get themselves heard louder than anyone else? What is it that makes them more marketable? Is it the fact that they have access ......

London wins 2012
Well done to the 2012 team for winning the Olympic bid!!! They fought valiantly right up until the last moment for this and their persistance and hard work won it!!! This is an excellent start for things to come. More information on the events of today can be found on the BBC website Althought many people don't like the idea of the games being in London or even in the UK, the general concensus in our office here is that it is a good thing. There was a big cheer when we all found out here! Genuine ......

Awaiting the IOC results for 2012
Well I am getting all excited. The bid results for the 2012 Olympic Games are due out today at 12:46pm (BST) I have my fingers and toes crossed for London to get it! It would be a great honour and so very exciting to host this event. I was in Manchester for the 2000 Commonwealth Games and have seen first hand just how much of a positive impact such events have on a city. I offer nothing but my complete support for this bid and I hope that we manage to persuade the IOC members that London is the place ......

Hotfix 885250 breaks network file share to Windows CE 4.2 devices.
I installed the above hotfix along with a number of others and ever since I have had chaos and hassle accessing our network file share on our Windows CE 4.2 devices. I thought that it was my computer at first. Then a colleague on Win 98 tried accessing it and that was fine. We tried a different XP pc with SP2 and all hotfixes and no other software and this had the same problem as mine. We then got another pc with no hotfixes but has XP with SP2 on it and nothing else and this worked fine…. ......
