I came across this article after it was syndicated in The Australian newspaper.
A small Adelaide company, Digislide, based at Dry Creek, is earning worldwide attention after inventing a miniature projector to solve the problem. The Digismart is a thumb-sized micro-optical device that can project on to a wall a 43 x 28cm full-colour image from a range of hand-held devices, including mobile phones, GPS navigation systems, MP3 players, portable media centres, gaming machines, PDAs and laptop computers.
The current Digismart model – which is likely to be further refined in terms of size and image resolution – has dimensions of 50 x 30 x 20mm for a stand-alone device, or 39 x 15 x 15mm when embedded into another product.
It is capable of producing a resolution of at least 640 x480 pixels (and, ultimately, probably up to 800 x 600) with 16.7 million colours.
Unlike movie projectors, it can't only be used in a darkened room. Using it in a dark room does increase the potential projection size and image clarity but it still has reasonable visibility in daylight unless used in direct sunlight.
