I recently bought a new Lenovo 3000 series Y410 laptop. I had upgraded the RAM to 4GB and was exited to see marked improvement in speed. But UNFORTUNATELY the Windows Vista Home Premium Edition spoilt the game for me..

It turns out that Vista does not "allow" us to work in VS 2003 IDE!!! I was like WTF!!! Read out thousands of articles and posts on how to solve the issue, I installed Vista Ultimate, but still VS 2003 won't operate. I also came to know that Vista is not only slower than XP but many other softwares just wont work in it. Only vista compatible softwares will function!

i was thinking why would MS do such a stupid mistake forcing users to upgrade to VS 2005 when many projects stil need to run on VS2003.

Anyways, I got frustrated with Vista hogging my RAM, slowing down my new machine, and not LETTING ME WORK!!

So I formatted my machine and installed XP. And now new set of problems appeared. The Laptop had no backwards compatibility, no drivers for XP!!! Once again, WTF!!!

I searched Google again for some drivers which I could plug in, after 4 days I got hold of a video driver that would just work.

But still sound drivers are missing. Dont know whats wrong with MS..my friend at the Dell call centre was saying that Dell customers are very frustrated using Vista and being unable to go back to XP due to driver issues, some are even planning to sue Dell!!!

This is not the "Microsoft Bus Driver" issue, is it?

(This simple fix was my most popular post ever, receiving almost 1/3 of a million hits.)

What has worked really well for me is vista as a host os and then set up a virtual machine with XP on it so that you can run VS 2003 when you need. VS 2005 works fine on vista.

Dude, just get yourself a free copy of Ubuntu 7.04 Fiesty Fawn or the latest Sabayon. Or even vector....

What M$ is doing is typical of corporate entanglement (of customers). Screw that horse feces dood, just get a decent OS like Ubuntu or Vista.

Any built for Vista machine the manufacturers are not providing XP support for can be converted with drivers from the chipset manufacturers. Microsoft also provides UAA drivers, which is short for Universal Audio Architecture. Once you have the chipset and UAA drivers in place, you should have access to the internet. When you do the Microsoft updates, in most cases, it will provide the missing drivers.

just a quick question

when you installed ultimate, did all the drivers worked like video and sound?

None of the drivers worked, and I contacted chipset manufacturers: they said they dont have drivers for XP and their boards are for Vista only, this really is frustrating.

I had to use older version of their drivers to make XP work, but they create other issues, like laptop hangs in between, requires frequent restarts, audio stops working sometimes blah blah...

Updates never work in such cases...!

Hi,

I just bought a Lenovo 3000 Y410 laptop just to get used to Vista and also that it was on sale for a prety good price. I noticed that the sound is not loud enough even when the volume is set to high. Have you found any audio enhancers for the Realtek HD Audio cards or any tweaks to make the audio oupu higher? If please, do e-mail me back. Thanks.

About 3 months ago I bought a DELL XPS M1330 with all the upgrades I could find for including Windows Vista. In those 3 months I already had to reinstall all the programs in my machine, the comnputer wrked fine for about 3 weeks, then I had problems with Norton and now I have troubles with iTunes, Norton and Internet Explorer. I called DELL and they told me it is posible to migrate back to XP, so I am going to do it, eventhough it is going to cost me US$ 200.00 to migrate. I HATE VISTA

I had so many problems with Vista that I can't begin to name all of them then something weird happened......
Over Xmas McAfee Security software was offered free after rebate. Well, because it was free I brought it home, uninstalled Norton and installed McAfee. I couldn't believe it but I have had no problems whatsoever since! Don't ask me to explain it but it may be worth a try....

well lets just see i have a motorola phone that has all the down loads for it and the soft where for it <problem you may ask > it wont work on vista i also have a htc phone you know the one that has Windows on it will not work it says i have to up grade my system to windows98 well i guess that would be an improvement

# re: Windows Vista sucks 7/8/2008 4:31 PM Vista is garbage, total junk
When you spend good money to buy an OS like Vista, you expect it to work and work well. I do not upgrade because I like dishing out extra money, I do so because the OS is supposed to bring benefits to my computing experience. Not daily crashes.

Seriously, this is the most unstable OS I have ever used and my vista-driven computer gives me the blue screen at least once a day.

I am appalled that this operating system even made it past a first beta release. Never mind hit the retail shelves.

Absolute junk. Period.

Switch to Linux my friends. Yes there's a learning curve, but it is secure, free, and best of all you can do what ever you want with it. No EULA, no making only one back-up disc, no product codes. Give Linux an honest chance. Once you taste the freedom of it you won't go back. I have Windows and Linux dual booted on my machine but I haven't used Windows in ages. It's time to let it go.

The hardest part of switching to Linux is choosing one of it's endless flavors. A matter of taste really and of finding a distribution that matches your hardware. With windows your choices are very limited. Vista or else! While Linux has versions for all kinds of different computers, personal tastes, and individual needs.

I would recommend the frustrated Windows user try out a Linux live CD first before installing anything to your hard drive. OpenSUSE, PCLinuxOS, Ubuntu, and Linux Mint would be my recommendation to new Linux users with fairly new computers. All offer a live CD for download. Just burn the ISO image to a CD and reboot. Give Linux a try. You've got nothing to loose and so much to gain.

I've burned over 20 Linux CDs in the past year and have 3 versions installed on my 2 computers. I love Linux! All the functionality I could ask for, for free! Why pay hundreds for the extra functionality Vista Ultimate or XP Professional offers over the Windows home versions? What a rip off. I'd never pay hundreds for Windows ever again.

I'm so glad I rid myself of my Windows dependency. I used to mindlessly go with the flow because I didn't realize there was another way. My only regret is that I didn't discover Linux sooner!

Now don't get me wrong. I like Windows. But I just can't see paying for an inferior product when Linux offers something better for free. Not to mention all the limitations. Freedom is priceless my friends. Priceless.

Switch to mac and avoid the M$ bullshit. I also traded my blackberry for an IPhone, and they are sweet.
