The most common misconception amongst Asp.net beginners…

There are lot of things that the average Asp.net newbie simply cannot grasp (hey it is a part of the learning process and I am definitely not one of the gurus), and one of them is that there is a surprisingly large group of people who can't understand the difference between web applications and desktop applications. They have the craziest ideas like accessing the client's serial ports or write to the clients file system.

Not that there is aaaanything wrong with that, it is just up to people like us to try and teach them. It's just an interesting observation I think.

I was at the opposite end of the spectrum when I started with ASP.Net, I was generally surprised whenever I discovered a class that accessed something about the user's local system, like IP, etc. (except for cookies... hmmm, cookies...).

Yes there are somethings that still could be dangerous due to bad implementation (like javascript and activex).
