Best of both worlds - using msn toolbar to search google

Well, finally the MS guys have heard the needs and given a means by which we can have multi-tabbed interface in IE. But for that we will have to install the MSN toolbar. I wouldn't mind doing it but since I am already using google toolbar for searching and I prefer searching in Google rather than MSN, its kind of a put off that we have to install and enable MSN in order to use the multi-toolbar feature.

Fortunately and I think with this drawback in mind, the MSN guys have given the option by which you can search where the MSN toolbar will search your queries. So, we can make the MSN toolbar to search the google for our queries and display the result and use it for enabling the multi-tabbed interface on IE as well.

Here is the procedure:

1) Goto MSN Toolbar settings

2) Goto General section

3) Under "Web search service" select "Other" radio button and provide the following string

http://www.google.com/search?q=$w&start=0&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=msie-msn

4) click "OK" to save and exit the settings

Please note that I have given some extra and optional parameter in the search string which can be removed without any problem. Have a nice day.

Gravatar wow! cheers matey. i was typing in just "www.google.com", but i never realised it had to be in stringed format. it's a shame you can apply it to things like the "news search" though....

thanks. 12/9/2005 2:11 PM | joe

Gravatar thanks so much...I'm not surprised that Microsoft made it so hard. Very helpful. 5/25/2006 1:56 AM | Rob
