Yahoo! Messenger 8 Beta Sucks Methane.

I've just uninstalled the new Yahoo! Messenger 8 Beta from my machine. It kept crashing spontaneously and when it did work, it comsumed whopping 42MB of my RAM and considerable CPU percentage (~30%)

I've reinstalled the older Yahoo! Messenger 7.5 (get it here if you're not satisifed with 8 Beta) which "only" takes up ~30MB of RAM and is stable.

I can't wait for Windows Live Messenger to support Yahoo! Messenger users already, so I can dump Yahoo! Messenger completely.

Well said. Not only is it unstable and cpu intensive, but you can't start conferences with it. Sure, you can invite people. But on your screen, you're the only one visible in the conference. NOT WORTH THE TROUBLE. Until these issues are corrected, 7.5 owns 8 beta.

Hi Pashune.

It's been over three weeks and Yahoo! Messenger 8 beta are still noticeably unstable and resource-intensive.

I'm confident Yahoo! are aware of stability issues, but I wonder how much emphasys they put on streamlining their code so that it doesn't take up so much CPU and memory resources.

Naive users are rarely aware of these issues and it's up to the software manufacturer not to "cut the corner" and go all the way in code quality.

On one of the machines I manage, I wondered why some programs weren't loading. I was more than a little shocked to find Messenger 8 beta taking up 160 Megs of RAM... on a machine with 384 Megs total.

I do not like YM 8 Beta. It has many confusing features. I prefer 7 version because is more stable and friendly.

It definitely sucks big time! I'm using version 5. It's more stable and non-buggy. yahoo messenger is a huge disappointment.

Microsoft recently came out with a new build, 566 (the above was based on 365). Okay, in this new build, things are a bit better. Contact list isn’t messed up anymore, as they reverted back to old style. Colours are screwed up either, once again because they reverted back. And the little icons that appear in the system tray have been reverted back too, so now it actually makes sense. Clearly seen, they just reverted back to old style of things, which made it better… Kinda begs the question why even getting the new version anyways? Nonetheless, 8 is still extremely bloated, and thus slow. I don’t recommend it.

Check out miranda (http://miranda-im.org), it eats about 4MB of mem, while being connected to YM and IRC :D
