I voted today for among others governor of Virginia. I was greeted by a demo of a new voting machine when I arrived at the polling place. Apparently, they're testing a completely computerized system. Right now they only have one machine and a whole bunch of ones with punch cards, but next year they're going to be all computerized.
I didn't notice it until I told the pollster my name and said I was going to use the electronic one (it was an option but of course I'm going to use the new gadget). She grabbed a little device, slipped a card inside it, punched some numbers, and then removed the card. Immediately I recognized the card as an RFID card and the device was a tag writer. Way cool!
Some will likely point out that this can probably be a huge privacy issue. I suspect that they are using the technology to tie voter numbers to ballots. There are a lot of people up in arms about privacy for RFID -- for example, with passports. I don't subscribe to that paranoia, but I do recognize the possibility of the abuse. Anyway, I thought it was neat.
