IT IS FINALLY HERE! Keenan just posted that the The Definitive Guide to the Microsoft Enterprise Library will be shipping November 26th. It has been a long time coming. While I played my small part in the initial writing, Keenan spent a lot of time trying to keep up with the face pace of Enterprise Library releases and still keep his day job. I encourage that you go out and pick up a copy. I know for my part I tried to make sure that it contained as much information as possible to extend the EL as well as how to use it out of the box.

David Hayden On .NET Rocks

This latest show really interested me since the topic was Enterprise Library. It is a subject that is near and dear to my heart since I spent significant amount of time working on a few chapters of a book for the 2.0 release. I have to admit I haven't had much time to keep up lately and had even forgotten that they had moved it to CodePlex.

I found the application blocks that were added for 3.0 exciting. The fact that there is now a validation application block and a policy injection application block I think shows how far we as a community have come in our abstraction.

Now there is also an Application Block Software Factory. Now that is something to get excited about. I can tell you from experience that even writing new classes isn't a cake walk. This sort of wire frame to help those brave enough to build their own application blocks is a god send.

Do yourself and your team a service and check this out.

It just seems like yesterday that Enterprise Library 2.0 was release. Today came the news that the first CTP was published for EL 3.0. And there are more surprises. It is no longer on GotDotNet. Enterprise Library has moved to CodePlex. I have a sneaking hunch that we will see more defects to CodePlex soon.

Tom Hollander has posted what the initial feature list of changes for the next version of the Enterprise Library will consist of. One item on the list made me think that they have really taken on a challenge. There is a new application block proposed for validation. I look at things like the client side validation control and the business rule scheme that Rocky uses in CSLA.NET and I just wish I could be a fly on the wall when they go to build this. It is going to be fun to come up with a solution that is flexible enough to cover a large number of scenarios and still perform. Good luck guys.

Update: I took a quick look around and found that this is a great place to start for those who don't know the Enterprise Library. It isn't going to impress any advanced users, but it is still very cool.

I finally sent off my Logging Application Block chapter to the main author, Keenan Newton, for an upcoming Apress Enterprise Library book. I have to say that I share Craig Shoemaker's sense of accomplishment at completing this type of endeavor. It gives me a new appreciation for all the authors that put out the tomes that I rely on to keep up with our industry.

Of course now that this is done I have time again to pursue other topics. I will be doing more work with ASP.NET, GAT and SC-BAT. As that moves along you will see more posts here about their cool features and gotchas. Until then ...
