Preparing For TechEd
This being my first time going to TechEd and I want to make sure that I get the most out of it. The first goal is to make sure that I get to the sessions that cover as many topics as possible. This is important for me as a Solution Architect consultant specializing in Microsoft technologies. To this end I have spent some time going through the sessions on the myTechEd site. The other reason for the trip is to connect with the Microsoft development community. This includes both members of my local ......

SkyDrive and Consumer Cloud Services
Paul Thurrrott recently posted an article on the future of SkyDrive and I was asked what I thought about its future by @UserCommunity. So let’s take a look. The breakdown from Microsoft that Paul described I believe is an accurate representation of users and usages. While I can’t say that I leverage SkyDrive to the extent that it was meant to be I do enjoy having OneNote hosted their and being able to consult and edit it from the desktop, web and Windows Phone. Taking that one step further is the ......

GWB Influencer
I was pleasantly surprised to find out this week that I am now part of the Geeks With Blogs Influencers program. It is hard to believe that it has been 5 1/2 years since I started blogging here. It has always been a great community and it is great to be able to show off how much I appreciate having this soapbox here to share ideas. I look forward to being here a lot longer. Finally, thanks to Jeff and the crew for keeping the lights on and continued improvements. del.icio.us Tags: GWB,Geeks With ......

Architecture Blooming In Chicago
For the last three years the Chicago Information Technology Architects Group has been the only community in the Chicago area for Software Architects, Enterprise Architects, Infrastructure Architects and Database Architects. Suddenly this is changing. The first change was a special interest group created by member of the Chicago .NET Users Group (CNUG). This has just started in the last couple of months. Now it was just announced that IASA is finally launching a Chicago chapter. This is something ......

Architects – Can’t We All Be Friends
Lately I have had some run-ins with structural architects who have warned me that calling myself or our user group Architects is against the law in Illinois. I still need to sort out if this is actually the case or not, but it makes me ask a number of questions. Clearly the law was not intended to protect the word Architect. It was meant to protect the profession and protect the public from people who were practicing architecture without proper training. We wouldn’t want buildings and bridges falling ......

Chicago Architect Group January Meeting Summary
Angela Binkowski covered Visual Studio 2010 focusing on the architecture tools at the most recent CAG meeting. This was a great evening with a lot of lively discussion. This would have been a great event for people who don’t think that Microsoft listens. As Angela was doing here presentation she was taking notes to bring back to the product team. Some of the highlights that I found interesting included: The Layer Diagram is a component or context diagram of sorts. The nice thing about this document, ......

Maintaining Blog Post Lists
I just don't know how other people do it. There are a number of individuals around the blogosphere who create lists on a daily or weekly basis which reflect what they think are hot topics. I have been creating a list that I email out to the members of the .NET community within my company for the last few months. For about the last three weeks I just have not been able to keep up with this effort. Part of the challenge is that I am not finding a lot that looks of interest to me. The raises a dilemma. ......

An Architect's Life As A Consultant
As with any career, consulting has a number of benefits and challenges. As a consultant architect you get to experience more environments than a in house architect. On the other hand you aren't assured that you will be doing architecture on every assignment. One day you may be working as a developer and the next as a project manager. So how do you keep your skills sharp and your resume viable? Your resume is going to be littered with jobs other than the title of architect. Within a project look for ......

To Link List Or Not To Link List
In the past I have had an aversion to link list posts. I have picked up a large number of blog subscriptions and most of these lists just contain what I have already seen. Lately my opinion has changed slightly. I am trying to evangelize within the company that I work for. In order to grow awareness of what is going on in the community as a whole I have started sending out emails with a distilled list of blog links. I figure if I have already found what I think are the jewels I can save others the ......

Creating A Paint.NET Effect Plugin
This is an area that I have not explored before. That is the creation of plug-ins and community property. Add to that the fact that the most graphical programming I have done is frame by frame line drawing animation on an Apple II. In this case I ran into a challenge online that requested an effect that Paint.NET did not offer. My first adventure started with a version of CodeLab published by BoltBait (sorry I don't have a real name). It is a tool that launches as an effect within Paint.NET giving ......

David Hayden On .NET Rocks
This latest show really interested me since the topic was Enterprise Library. It is a subject that is near and dear to my heart since I spent significant amount of time working on a few chapters of a book for the 2.0 release. I have to admit I haven't had much time to keep up lately and had even forgotten that they had moved it to CodePlex. I found the application blocks that were added for 3.0 exciting. The fact that there is now a validation application block and a policy injection application ......

Now That Is Dedication To Your Product
Yesterday I posted about adding whatIf functionality to a PowerShell script. Less than 24 hours later I had a comment from Jeffrey Snover of the PowerShell team. This isn't the first time that I have noticed hits to my blog from Microsoft addresses after posting on one subject or another. I find the fact that the product teams are keeping an eye on the community reassuring. Keep up the good work guys ......

Pay It Forward
One of my hobbies is photography (webshots, zooomr) and I was listening to The Digital Photography Show podcast where the guest was Kevin Kubota. He presents photography seminars and is offering scholarships to his seminars. The interesting part of the application is that you have to describe what charity work you do. He said that he figures if he is doing something for you then you should be doing something for your community to show that you are serious. So how does this relate to architecture ......

Architect Community and Resources
Being an architect or becoming an architect is not an easy thing to do. In most companies if there is even a single architect you are lucky. This means that you are on your own to figure out what an architect should really be. No wonder no one can agree on what an architect is. One thing I would like to see is an apprenticeship and mentoring program within the architect community. Experience is key to becoming an architect, but there are component skills that can be grown and nurtured. We need to ......

Why Performance and Scalable is Required Reading
We are in the middle of addressing some production issues at my current client. One of them involves an ASP.NET application which is slow to respond at times and other times does not seem to respond at all. The fun part is that there is nothing from the application side which is giving us a clue as to what is going on. This has been going on for a while and people are starting to get frustrated, so it was decided to call the experts from Microsoft. So we start having conference calls and the MS representatives ......
