Dr. Horrible and what it makes me think of Firefly

That title seems a little odd, doesn't it? I know Whedon wrote both things, but why would one make me think of the other so much?

I just finished watching Dr. Horrible, and I thought it was great. Very funny in that tongue in cheek way, with many layers of depth to appreciate...a villain and a hero who aren't, deep thoughts about getting what you want not always being the best thing for you, etc. Captain Hammer specifically explaining about what the hammer is...well, it was funny.

I've done some reading on the Net to see what others thought, and most people were dissatisfied with the ending...or so it would seem. I figure Whedon wrote the story that Whedon wanted to write. It's his story and he told it his own way. So, there is no right or wrong to the ending, it simply is.

It got me thinking about some of Whedon's other stories and such, though.

I've decided that perhaps were are better off that Firefly ended when it did. I know, I know...sacrilege...it even stuns me that I am saying it.

I am thinking of some of the plot twists that Whedon had to make to keep Buffy going for so long, how often he would introduce plot devices without any prior preamble (IMO) that changed the direction of the plot 90 degress....Angelicus and Buffy can't hook up (gotta have tension between characters), Spike gets tamed and cant bite anymore..etc. I realize some of these changes were necessary to inject new life into a series that ran way long. I suppose this is the nature of TV shows.

Firefly, however, is not affected by such things. It is 14 episodes we can watch over and over again...and enjoy the purity of the story unblemished. It's just tough to imagine the original story arc drastically altered from its original canon.

So, anyone else want to get a Captain Hammer t-shirt?
